The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team hung on to win a tight game over the Roosevelt Lady Eagles on Monday, 15-14.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 5-1 in district play.
Amaya McCanick pitched five innings for the Lady Cats giving up four hits, six walks and five runs, three earned, while earning six strike outs. Maggie McNeese pitched two innings, giving up seven hits, one walk and nine runs, six earned, while earning two strike outs.
In the bottom of the first inning Bryndle Ray drew a lead-off walk before stealing second and third to get into scoring position. She would score on a passed ball, to put the Lady Cats up, 1-0. Sophia Mata also drew a walk, before Isaihla Garza flew out to right field for out number one. Mata stole second on a passed ball, before McNeese drove in a run with a single through the right side, making the score, 2-0.
Bri Aleman kept it going with an RBI-single to left field, making the score, 30, before Hannah Lopez grounded out to third base to end the inning.
The Lady Cats held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the top of the second inning, and in the home-half, Mata roped a double to center field, as Abby Rodriguez scored to make the score, 4-0. Garza singled through the left side to drive in a run, she took second on the throw home, as the Lady Cats stretched their lead to, 5-0.
Garza would score on an error by the shortstop to make the score, 6-0, heading into the third inning.
Littlefield kept the Lady Eagles scoreless in the top of the third, and in the bottom half, Rodriguez laid down a bunt and reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Lopez to score, and later in the inning, Tailyn Gomez hit a sacrifice grounder to shortstop, and was thrown out at first as Rodriguez scored to make the score, 8-0, heading to the fourth inning.
The Lady Cat defense kept the Lady Eagles quiet in the top of the fourth and they picked back up where they left off offensively in the bottom of the fourth, as McNeese scored on an error to make the score, 9-0, before McCanick singled on an error by the first baseman. Aleman hit a tworun homerun to center field to extend the lead to, 11-0.
Rodriguez doubled on a line drive to left field to drive in Lopez and Rodriguez tagged up and scored from third on a fly ball to center by Ray, making the score, 13-0, going to the fifth inning.
The Lady Eagles would scratch five runs across in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 13-5, and in the top of the sixth, Bryant and Thompson sent a pair of homeruns over the fence to slice the lead to, 13-9.
Peyton Galvan scored on an error by the shortstop in the bottom of the sixth to make the score, 14-9, but the Lady Eagles would tie it up with five runs in the top of the seventh, knotting the game up, 14-14.
In the bottom of the seventh, Garza would tag-up and score from third on a line drive to center field by McCanick, as the Lady Cats walked off with the, 15- 14, victory over Roosevelt.
The Lady Cats will close out the first half of district play next Tuesday with a road game against Slaton.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
