Wildcats take down Mules in extras, 7-6

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity baseball team went on the road Saturday and took down the Muleshoe Mules in extra innings, 7-6.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-1 in district play.

Gabe Mata started on the mound for the Wildcats, pitching six inning, giving up four hits and three runs, two earned, while earning five strike outs. Ana Ayala gave up two hits and two runs, while Jayden Kirkland pitched two innings, giving up three hits and one run, while earning two strike outs.

Muleshoe jumped out in front early with one run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Wildcats answered to tie the game, 11, in the top of the second inning.

The score remained until the top of the fifth inning, when Littlefield plated three runs to push their lead to, 4-1. Muleshoe responded with w runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut Littlefield’s lead to one run, 4-3. Each team scratched two runs in the sixth inning to make the score, 6-5, and in the bottom of the seventh, Muleshoe added a run to tie the game, 6-6, to send it to extra innings.

However, in the eighth inning, Littlefield outscored the Mules, 1-0, to take the contest, 7-6.

At the plate, the Wildcats totaled nine hits and nine walks, led by Cayson Villareal, who had three hits, including two doubles, one walk and three RBI’s. Kyzer Billingsley had two hits including a double, two walks and one RBI, while Kirkland tallied one hit and drew three walks. Mata added a hit, a walk and an RBI, while Ayala tallied two hits and a walk.

The Wildcats hosted Roosevelt on Monday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Saturday at home against Friona.

First pitch is scheduled for noon.
