Mustangs finish 1-1-1 at Lamb County CLassic

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team went 1-1-1 at the Lamb County Classic this past weekend, as they battled with Post, Friona and Morton.

In their first game on Thursday against Post, the Mustangs tied with the Antelopes, 7-7.

Dax Light pitched five innings, giving up eight hits, one walk and seven runs, five earned, while earning seven strikeouts. Paytn Jimenez pitched one inning, giving up one hit and one walk, while earning one strike out.

Post jumped out in front early with four runs in the top of the first inning, but Olton answered with two runs of their own in the home-half, making the score, 4-2. The Mustangs would keep the Antelopes scoreless over the next three innings, while adding four runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third, pushing their lead to, 7-2.

Post would battle back, scratching two runs across in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game, 7-7.

The Mustangs tallied five hits, led by Emmitt Nelson, who had a triple, a walk and an RBI. Cesar Ceballos added two doubles, while Callen Burns added one hit, two walks and an RBI. Jimenez drew three walks in the contest and Wyatt Francis had two walks.

On Friday, the Mustangs fell to the Friona Chieftains, 20-8.

Jimenez started on the bump for Olton, as he pitched two innings, giving up nine hits, three walks and 10 runs, five earned, while earning three strike outs. Jett Tomsu pitched 1.2 innings giving up three hits, seven walks and 10 runs, three earned, while earning two strike outs. RJ Chavira pitched 0.1 innings.

Friona struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Olton got one run back in the bottom half of the first to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Friona would respond with five runs in the top of the second inning and eight runs in the top of the third inning, pushing their lead to, 15-1.

Olton though, would battle back, scratching six runs across in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to, 15-7. Friona would outscore Olton, 5-1, in the fourth inning to take ht contest, 20-8.

The Mustangs totaled six hits as a team, led by Jimenez and Colby Burns, who each finished with a hit and two RBI’s. Ceballos drew two walks and had a hit, while Chavira had two walks in the contest. Tomsu had a hit and a walk and Callen Burns recorded a hit in the contest.

In their final tournament game on Saturday, the Mustangs rallied to a, 16-15, victory over Morton.

Jimenz threw one inning, earning one strike out, while Tomsu pitched one inning, giving up three hits, one walk and three runs, while earning one strike out. Chavira gave up four walks and four runs, while Francis pitched 0.1 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and three runs, while earning one strike out. Nelson pitched two innings, giving up two hits, six walks and five runs, four earned, while earning three strike outs, and Callen Burns pitched 0.2 innings, earning one strike out.

The Mustangs held the Indians scoreless in the first inning, while pushing one run across in the bottom half, but Morton would answer with three runs in the top of the second to make the score, 3-1.

The Mustangs would push another run across in the bottom of the second inning, making the score, 3-2, but Morton would explode for seven runs in the top of the third, stretching their lead to, 10-2. Olton continued to scratch, as they added four runs in the bottom of the third, trimming the lead to, 106.

The Mustangs would hold Morton to one run in the top of the fourth, before having an explosive inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth, where they plated 10 runs to take a, 16-11, lead. Morton would score four runs in the top of the fifth, falling short to Olton, 16-15.

The Mustangs tallied 10 hits as a team led by Jimenez, who had a double and three RBI’s, while Tomsu had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Colby Burns tallied two hits and three RBI’s, while Ceballos and Chavira each added one hit and two RBI’s.

The Mustangs were back in action on Tuesday at home against Floydada. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday on the road against Plains.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
