Lady Cat softball falls on the road to Brownfield, 18-6

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varisty softball team fell on the road to the Brownfield Lady Cubs on Tuesday, 186.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 0-3 overall on the season.

Amaya McCanick pitched 2.1 innings in the circle for the Lady Cats, giving up eight hits, two walks and 10 runs, six earned. She also had three strikeouts. Maggie McNeese pitched 1.2 innings, giving up three hits, one walk and eight runs, seven earned. She also had two strikeouts in the contest.

The Lady Cats couldn’t get the bats going in the first innings, as Isaihla Garza struck out swinging for out number one. Bryndle Ray flew out to left field for out number two and Hannah Lopez struck out looking to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the first, Franco grounded out to Brianna Aleman at third base for out number one, but Dominguez singled on a bunt to third to give the Lady Cubs a base runner. However, Gonzalez popped up to Garza at second base, who threw it to Ray at second for the double play to end the inning.

McCanick singled on a hard grounder up the middle to give the Lady Cats a base runner in the top of the second inning and McNeese reached on an error by Gutierrez at first base, before Aleman struck out swinging for out number one. Tailyn Gomez singled to right field, as McCanick scored and McNeese advaned to third, making the score, 1-0.

Peyton Galvan struck out swinging for out number two Janella Rodriguez reached on an error by Gutierrez at first base, as McNeese and Gomez scored, stretching the lead to, 3-0. Garza would pop up to Salas at shortstop to end the inning.

Salas drew a walk to give the Lady Cubs a base runner in the bottom of the second and Bowman singled on a fly ball to left field, before the next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brownfield. Gutierrez drove a two-RBI single to left field, leaving runners on second and third, with the lead cut to, 3-2.

Brownfield scored on a passed ball to tie the game, 3-3, as Gutierrez advanced to third on the play, and the Lady Cubs scored again on a single to rgiht field to take the lead, 4-3. McCanick got Molina to strike out swinging for out number one, but Franco walked, putting runners on first and second for the Lady Cubs.

The runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball and Dominguez hit a sac grounder to Rodriguez at first base to score a run, pushing their lead to, 5-3. McCanick got Gonzalez to strike out swinging to end the inning.

The Lady Cats opened the third inning with back-toback singles by Ray and Lopez and McCanick followed it up with an RBIdouble to center field, putting runners on second and third with the lead cut to, 54. McNeese popped up to Dominguez in the circle for out number one, but Aleman drew a walk to load the bases for Littlefield.

The Lady Cats would leave the bases loaded, as Gomez struck out looping and Galvan hit into a fielder’s choice to Gonzales at third, who stepped on third base for the force out to retire the side.

Brownfield responded with five runs in the bottom of the third and eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to, 18-4.

In the top of the fifth, Aleman struck out swinging for out number one, but Gomez singled to right field and Galvan drew a walk to give the Lady Cats a pair of base runners. Rodriguez singled to left field to load the bases, and Gomez scored on a passed ball, as the runners advanced to second and third, trimming the lead to, 18-5. Garza, though would pop up to shortstop for out number two.

Galvan scored on a passed ball, but Ray grounded out to Franco at second base to end the game, as the Lady Cats fell on the road to Brownfield, 18-6.

The Lady Cats were at Coahoma on Saturday for a double- header with Coahoma and Clyde. Results were not available at press time. They will be at home on Tuesday for their home- opener against Tahoka.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
