The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team rolled past the Friona Squaws on Tuesday, 55-26, to sweep the season series at Wildcat Gym.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 20-11 overall, 9-5 in district play.
Harley London gathered the tip-off quickly dishing it to Aaliyah Padilla for a layup to put the Squaws in front, 2-0. On the other end, Nia Cleveland was fouled on a put-back attempt by Reese Steelman. She sank both shots at the line and Madison Williams followed it up with a three from the right elbow to put the Lady Cats in front, 5-2.
Cobi Saldana kept it going with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Williams, but Jessica Viss dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Padilla, trimming the lead to, 8-4, with 4:51 to play in the opening quarter. Williams buried another three from the right wing, off of an assist from Cleveland, as Friona took a time out with 3:58 to play in the first quarter, trailing, 11-4.
Out of the break, Annison Steelman dropped in a layup off of the inbound pass from Padilla on the sideline, but Zalise Davis responded, driving the middle for a layup to make the score, 13-6. With 3:07 to play in the quarter, Padilla grabbed a steal from Davis, taking it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, and Reese Steelman followed it up with a lay-up for Friona, slicing the lead to, 13-10, with 2:29 remaining in the quarter.
Padilla took a charge on Davis to close out the first quarter with the Lady Cats clinging to a three-point lead, 13-10.
Williams opened the second frame with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Saldana, as Littlefield called for a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Jefferson dished the ball down low to Cleveland for a lay-up, pushing their lead back out to double-digits, 20-10. London dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Annison Steelman, trimmingthe lead to, 20-12.
With 1:47 remaining in the half, Davis knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, and on their next possession, she was fouled on an attempt by Jaylee Perez. Davis sank one-of-two shots at the line and Jefferson followed it up, sinking a pair of free throws to close out the first half with Littlefield in front, 25-12.
Cleveland was fouled on a shot attempt by London to open the second half, her third. Cleveland sank both shots at the line and on their next possession, Jefferson hit Williams on the break for a lay-up, making the score, 29--12, with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter.
Williams drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Jefferson, as Friona took a time out with 6:35 to play in the third quarter. Out of the break, London dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Williams, her second. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 32-14.
Saldana buried a jumper from the left wing, off of an assist from Cleveland and Jefferson followed it up with a three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Williams, pushing their lead to, 37-14, with 3:47 to play in the quarter. Williams kept it going with a three from the right elbow, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:32 to play in the quarter, leading, 40-14.
Out of the break, Williams hit Jefferson in transition for a lay-up and with under a minute to go in the quarter, Williams grabbed a steal on their own end and was fouled on the shot attempt by London, who fouled out of the contest. Williams sank both shots at the line, but Aimee Jimenez closed out the third quarter with a floater from the right elbow, trimming the lead to, 44-16, going into the final quarter of play.
Reese Steelman knocked down a jumper in the lane to open the fourth quarter for Friona and Padilla followed it up with a floater in the lane, trimming the lead to, 44-20. With just over six minutes remaining, Davis was fouled on a shot attempt by Annison Steelman. She made the first shot and missed the second, but Jefferson was there for the put-back. Stretching their lead to, 47-20.
Jefferson sank a pair of free throws after being fouled by Jimenez, who picked up her third foul of the game, and Davis was fouled on an attempt by Jimenez on their next possession, giving her, her fourth foul of the game. Davis converted oneof- two shots at the line, making the score, 50-20.
Davis split another pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Annison Steelman and on the following possession, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Padilla, her third of the game. Jefferson sank both free throws pushing their lead to, 53-20. Annison Steelman and Padilla scored back-to-back buckets for Friona, but with under a minute to play, Davis dished a pass through traffic to Williams, who finished with a reverse lay-up to make the score, 55-24.
Padilla would pick up a steal from Davis, and she took it to the hoop for a fastbreak lay-up, as Littlefield took the contest over Friona, 55-26.
Williams led the Lady Cats in scoring with 21 points, and she was joined in double figures scoring by Jefferson, who tallied 13 points. Davis contributed eight points, while Saldana tallied seven points and Cleveland added six points in the contest.
The Wildcats were at Dimmitt on Friday to take on the Bobbies for their second meeting of district play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Idalou.
Tip-off is slated for 6:15 p.m.
