LAdy Cats blast talkington, 89-30

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team cruised past Talkington last Thursday, 89- 30, at Estacado High School in Lubbock.

With the win, the Lady Cats improved to 18-10 overall, 7-4 in district play.

Amoni Jeferson opened the game with a steal, taking it to the hoop for a fastbreak lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 2-0. On their next possession, Cobi Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Annelise Hohbine. She converted both attempts at the line, making the score, 4-0, with 6:52 left to play in the opening quarter.

Zalise Davis kept it going with a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Madison Williams and Jefferson followed it up with a steal, which led to a fastbreak jumper from the left elbow, pushing their lead to, 9-0, as Talkington took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Williams hit Davis with an outlet pass for a fast-break lay-up, and Jefferson followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Davis, stretching the lead to, 14-0, with five minutes to play in the quarter. Williams kept it going with a lay-up, and Jefferson drained another three from the left elbow off of an assist from Williams, extending their lead to, 190, with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.

Talkington would respond, as they closed out the quarter on a, 7-0, scoring run, trimming the lead to, 19-7, going into quarter number two.

Talkington opened the second frame with a jumper from the left side, and they called a time out to prevent a jumpball with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. Out of the break, the Lady Warriors dropped in a lay-up off of a Littlefield turnover, but Davis answered on the other end, driving the right side for a lay-up, making the score, 21-11.

Ia’kah Burgess and Charly Iaulualo dropped in back-to-back lay-ups for the Lady Warriors, but on the other end, Davis was fouled on an attempt by Mabel Roller. She made the first shot and missed the second, making the score, 22-15. With just over four minutes remaining in the half, Davis picked up a steal and got it ahead to Jefferson in transition for a lay-up, stretching the lead to, 2415.

Hohbine dropped in a layup in transition, but Jefferson responded with a steal that led to a fast-break lay-up, and on their next possession, Williams was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots at the line, pushing the lead to, 2817. Davis was fouled on an attempt by Hohbine sending her to the line with 38.5 seconds remaining in the half. She made one-of-two shots at the line, and with time winding down in the half, Jefferson hit Williams down low for a lay-up, making the score, 31-17, going into the locker room at halftime.

Saldana opened the second half with a lay-up and Williams grabbed a steal in their own end and dropped it in for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Burgess. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 35-17, with 7:22 to play in the third quarter. Jefferson drained a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Williams, but Iaulualo answered with a three of her own from the left elbow, making the score, 38-20.

Davis dropped in a floater in the lane and Williams followed it up by stealing the inbound pass from Burgess for an easy lay-up, extending their lead to, 42-20. With 4:32 to play in the third, Burgess dropped in a fastbreak lay-up for the Lady Warriors, but on the other end, Williams was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws, pushing their lead to, 44-22.

Iaulualo dropped in a layup for Talkington, but Jefferson responded with a steal in their own end, dishing it to Williams for a layup and Williams followed it up with a jumper from the left wing, off of an assist from Jefferson, stretching the lead to, 48-24. Davis kept it going with a steal in their own end, taking it to the hoop and finishing with a lay-up through contact to make the score, 50-24, with just under three minutes to go in the quarter.

Talkington scored backto- back buckets, but Williams answered with a drive on the left side for a lay-up. With time winding down in the quarter, Jefferson picked up a steal from Hohbine under their own basket and she was fouled on a shot attempt by Hohbine. She made one-oftwo shots at the line, making the score, 53-28, going into the final quarter of play.

Jefferson opened the final frame with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Williams and she followed it up with a steal, dishing the outlet pass ahead to Williams for a fast-break lay-up, stretching the lead to, 58-28. Jefferson grabbed an offensive rebound on their next possession, dropping in a lay-up and Davis followed it up with a steal on defense, dishing it ahead to Jefferson for the fastbreak lay-up, making the score, 62-28, with 6:19 left to play.

Saldana picked up a steal, which led to a fast-break lay-up, as Talkington called for a time out with 5:46 to play in the game. Out of the break, Williams picked up a steal and dished it ahead to Jefferson on the fast-break for a lay-up, and on their next possession, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Hohbine. She sank both shots at the line to push their lead to, 68-28.

Saldana scored on a fastbreak lay-up and Williams followed it up with a steal on defense, dishing it ahead to Jefferson for the fastbreak lay-up, extending the lead to, 72-28, with 3:24 to play in the contest. Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Iaulualo and sank both free throws to push the lead to, 74-28. Davis sank a pair of free throws, but Talkington knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to end the scoring drought, making the score, 76-30.

Littlefield would close out the game on a, 13-0, scoring run to take the contest, 89-30.

The Lady Cats were led by Jefferson, who netted 33 points. She was joined in double-figures scoring by Williams, who tallied 27 points and Davis, who contributed 21 points. Saldana had eight points in the contest.
