The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team cruised past the Dimmitt Bobbies on Tuesday with a, 66-34, home victory at Wildcat Gym.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 5-2 in district play.
Amoni Jefferson opened the game with a put-back off of her own miss and Cobi Saldana followed it up with a steal, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, pushing their lead to, 4-0. Nia Cleveland passed the ball into Jefferson on their next possession, as she dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Riley Ramos. She converted the free throw, making the score, 7-0.
With 5:52 left to play in the opening quarter, Jefferson buried a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Saldana, extending their lead to, 100. On the other end, Idanis Ortega dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Cleveland. She converted the free throw, trimming the lead to, 10-3. Saldana was fouled in transition by Aislei Thomas and split the free throws, but Dimmitt answered with a lay-up in transition by Harmonee Moreno, cutting the lead to, 11-5, with 4:31 to play in the first quarter.
Cleveland and Jefferson each converted a pair pf free throws and Zalise Davis followed it up with back-to-back steals, finishing both plays with a lay-up to push their lead back out to, 19-5, with 2:27 to play in the quarter. Dimmitt took a time out with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter, and out of the break, Kaylynn Grado was fouled on the floor by Williams. She converted both shots at the line, but Jefferson responded, going coast-to-coast for a lay-up to make the score, 21-8.
But, in the closing seconds of the quarter, Grado was fouled on the floor by Abbie Rodriguez, her second of the game, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to cut the lead to, 21-10, as the first quarter came to a close.
Madison Williams hit Davis with an outlet pass for a fast-break lay-up to open the second frame, and Jefferson followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push their lead back out to, 26-10. With 5:09 to play in the half, Williams was fouled on an attempt by Aracelli Herrera, her second of the game. Williams sank both free throws, and Jefferson followed it up with a drive through the middle for a lay-up, making the score, 30-10.
Saldana knocked down a jumper from the left wing, and on their next possession, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Aubrey Anes, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots, and Williams kept the run going with a three from the left elbow to extend their lead to, 36-10. With 2:38 remaining in the half, Davis drove the middle for a layup, but Dimmitt would close out the half with a lay-up, as Littlefield took a, 38-12, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Idanis Ortega to open the second half. Jefferson converted both shots at the line and Davis followed it up with a steal on the next play, drive to the basket, she dumped the ball off to Saldana for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 4214. CJ Sepeda got the Bobbies on the board in the second half with a lay-up, but on the other end, Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Herrera, her fourth. Saldana made one-of-two shots at the line, stretching their lead to, 43-14, with 5:09 left to play in the third quarter.
Ralee Aguero knocked down a jumper from the left wing for Dimmitt, and Moreno followed it up with a three from the top of the key, drawing an and-one foul on Saldana. She converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 43- 20, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:12 to play in the quarter.
With 1:35 remaining in the third, Anes dropped in a layup, but Davis answered on the other end with a floater in the lane, making the score, 45-22. With under a minute to play in the third quarter, Aubree Richardson was fouled on an attempt by Idalis Ortega. She converted both shots at the line and Jefferson split a pair of free throws to close out the third quarter with Littlefield in front, 48-22.
Davis opened the final frame with a three from the left elbow and Williams, on their next possession, got the ball down low to Cleveland for a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 53-22. Davis hit Williams in transition for a lay-up and on their next possession, Jefferson was fouled on a put-back attempt by Moreno, her second of the game. Jefferson converted both shots at the line, stretching the lead to, 57-22.
Anes dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Aguero under the basket, as the Bobbies took a time out with 4:41 to play in the game. Out of the break, Idanis Ortega dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Davis, her third. The free throw was good, trimming the lead to, 57-27. Saldana answered with a three from the right wing, but Idanis Ortega responded on the other end with a floater from the right side to trim the lead to, 60-29.
Jefferson drove the middle for a floater and the Lady Cats followed it up with another basket, before Davis was fouled on an attempt by Ramos, her fourth of the game. Davis sank both shots at the line, making the score, 66-29, with just under two minutes remaining. Herrera drained a three from the right elbow and Aydryane Rosas closed out the game with a lay-up off of the assist from Grado, as Littlefield defeated Dimmitt, 66-34.
The Lady Cats were led by Jefferson, who finished with 26 points, as one-ofthree Lady Cats in doublefigures scoring. Davis tallied 15 points, while Saldana chipped in 11 points. Williams added six points, while Cleveland tallied four points, and Richardson and Rodriguez each finished with two points.
The Lady Cats closed out the first half of district play on Friday with a road game against Idalou. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Shallowater.
Tip-off is slated for 6:15 p.m.
