The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team dropped their first meeting with the Slaton Tigerettes on Monday, 56-46, in district play.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to, 3-2 in district play.
Cobi Saldana opened the game with a put-back, but Brocoiya Harris answered with a floater from the left side, and Kolbi McCord followed it up with a lay-up on the left side, off of an assist from Jazarae Wilborn, pushing their lead to, 4-2, with 6:41 remaining in the opening quarter. McCord drove the left side for a layup, but Madison Williams answered with a three from the left side, off of an assist from Amoni Jefferson, slicing the lead to, 6-5.
Jefferson followed it up with a step-back from the right elbow, off of the assist from Nia Cleveland, but Serenity McNabb answered with a three from the right wing, putting Slaton back in front, 9-7, with 4:10 to play in the first quarter. McCord picked up a steal and was fouled on a shot attempt by Saldana. She sank both shots from the line, making the score, 117.
McCord would earn another trip to the line, after drawing a blocking foul on Williams on a fast-break. She again converted both shots at the line, making the score, 13-7. On the other end, Cleveland grabbed an offensive rebound, getting it to Williams, who was fouled on a shot attempt by McNabb with 3:05 to play in the quarter. She converted both shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 13-9.
Lucy Dominguez dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Harris, but Jefferson answered with a lay-up on the left side, making the score, 15-11, with 2:23 to play in the quarter. Harris dropped in a floater on the right side, and Ja’Mya Wilborn followed it up with a lay-up, making the score, 19-11.
Williams would close out the first quarter with a three from the left wing, cutting the lead to 19-14, heading into quarter number two.
Jefferson opened the second quarter with a jumper from the right elbow, but Slaton knocked down a jumper from the right wing to push their lead to, 21-16. Harris scored back-to-back lay-ups for the Tigerettes, but Williams would answer with a jumper from the left elbow, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:38 to play in the first half.
Out of the break, Dominguez buried a three from the left wing, but on the other end, Jefferson would grab her own rebound and drop it in for a put-back to make the score, 28-20. McNabb split a pair of free throws, after being fouled on an attempt by Williams, her third, making the score, 29-20, as the first half came to a close.
Cleveland opened the scoring in the second half with a lay-up off of the assist from Jefferson, and Jefferson followed it up with a steal for a fast-break layup, forcing Slaton to take a time out with 5:35 to play, and their lead cut to, 29-24. Out of the break, Harris banked in a jump hook from the right side, but on the other end, Cleveland was fouled on an attempt by Harris, her second of the game. Cleveland sank oneof- two shots from the line making the score, 31-25.
With 4:32 to play in the third quarter, Jefferson drove the right side for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Harris, her third. She missed the free throw making it a four-point game, 31-27. McCord knocked down a jumper from the right side for Slaton, but on the other end, Zalise Davis drove the left side for a layup, trimming the lead to, 3529.
With under three minutes to play in the quarter, McCord was fouled by Davis; she sank both shots at the line, and she followed it up with a jumper from the top of the key, off of an assist from Kashlyn Conkin, pushing the Tigerette lead to, 40-29. With just over two minutes to play in the third, Jefferson drew a shooting foul on Jazarae Wilborn, her second. Jefferson made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 40-30.
Davis dropped in a layup and Jefferson followed it up with a jumper in the lane, off of an assist from Williams, but Ja’Mya Wilborn answered with a lay-up off of the assist from McCord, making the score, 42-34. With under a minute to play in the quarter, Williams buried a three from the right wing and on their next possession, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws, making the score, 42-38, going into the final quarter of play.
Kali Stafford opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from McCord and with 5:44 to play, McCord drove the lane kicking it out to McNabb, who buried a three from the left wing, making the score, 47-38. Jefferson dropped in a layup to end the scoring drought for Littlefield, as the Lady Cats took a time out with 5:09 to play, trailing, 47-40.
Out of the break, Harris was fouled on an attempt by Cleveland, her second. She converted both shots at the line to push their lead back out to, 49- 40. Jefferson took a charge on Dominguez to regain possession for Littlefield, and Williams followed it up with a steal, dishing the outlet pass ahead to Davis for a fast-break lay-up, trimming the lead to, 49-42.
Slaton took a time out with 3:26 to play, and out of the break, Conkin drove the middle for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 51-42. Cleveland dropped in a putback off of a miss by Davis, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:11 left to play. Out of the break, Dominguez dropped in a put-back off of a miss by McCord, making the score, 53-44.
After a Slaton time out, Dominguez gathered the outlet pass and dropped in a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Saldana, her third of the game. She converted the free throw to make the score, 56-44. With time winding down, Cleveland was fouled by Dominguez and converted both shots at the line, as Littlefield fell to Slaton, 5646.
The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Jefferson, who netted 18 points, and Williams, who chipped in 13 points. Cleveland contributed six points, while Davis added six points and Saldana finished with two points in the contest.
