Lady Cats clip Lady Eagles, 73-38

The Littlefield Lady Cat’s varsity basketball team overcame a slow start on the road on Friday, as they took down the Lady Eagles,73-38.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 3-1 in district play.

Amoni Jefferson dropped in a lay-up off of an inbound pass from Cobi Saldana under the basket to open the scoring for Littlefield, but Avery Putnam answered with a put-back off of a miss by Kyndal Grimes to tie the game, 2-2. Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Putman and sank both shots at the line to put the Lady Cats back in front, 42.

Putman picked up a steal from Madison Williams on the Roosevelt end of the floor, taking it to the hoop for a lay-up to tie the game, 4-4, as Roosevelt took a time out with 5:35 to play in the opening quarter. Out of the break, Jefferson dropped in a floater from the right elbow, but Putman responded with a lay-up off of a Littlefield turnover, tying the game, 6-6. Putman followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Alejandra Perez to put Roosevelt in front, 8-6, but it was short-lived, as Williams drove the lane, kicking the ball out to Abbie Rodriguez, who knocked down a jumper from the left wing to tie the game, 8-8, with 3:47 to play in the first quarter. Jefferson dropped in a floater from the left side off of a turnover by the Lady Eagles, as Roosevelt took a time out with 3:33 to play in the quarter. With 2:55 to play in the first quarter, Grimes dropped in a floater in the lane to tie the game, 10-10, but two plays later, Williams was fouled on the floor by Stormy Waters Whitehead, earning a trip to the line. Williams split the attempts at the line, making the score, 11-10.

With 1:43 to play in the quarter, Nia Cleveland was fouled on the floor by Ansley Price, her third foul of the game. Cleveland sank both shots at the line and Williams followed it up with a steal on defense, taking it to the hoop for a fastbreak lay-up, making the score, 15-10 to close out the first quarter.

Saldana puled up for a jumper from the left elbow to open the second frame, but Miley Rogers answered with a lay-up to make the score, 17-12, with 7:35 to play in the half. Saldana would answer with a three from the right elbow, off of an assist from Cleveland and she followed it up with a lay-up on the right side, pushing their lead to, 22-12, with 6:26 to play in the first half.

Putman dropped in a floater off of a Littlefield turnover, but Cleveland answered with a lay-up off of an assist from Zalise Davis and Jefferson dropped in a lay-up off of an inbound pass from Saldana, extending the lead to, 26-14, with 5:15 to play in the half. Honda Perez banked in a three from the left elbow and Grimes followed it up with a jumper from the left wing to cut the lead to, 2619, as Littlefield took a time out with 3:27 to play in the half.

Out of the break, Grimes knocked down a jumper from the right wing in transition and with just over a minute to go in the half, Putman buried a three from the left elbow to make it a one-possession game, 2624. Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Saldana and in the closing seconds of the half, Cleveland was fouled on a third-chance try by Grimes, her second. She made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 29-24, going into the locker room at halftime.

Putman opened the second half with a three from the left elbow, but Davis answered with a floater from the right side to make the score, 31-27. Grimes responded with a jumper from the left elbow, off of an assist from Putman, but Williams hit Davis with an outlet pass for a fast-break lay-up to make the score, 33-29 with 5:38 to play in the third quarter.

Roosevelt took a time out with 5:03 to play in the third, and out of the break, Williams drove the lane, bouncing a pass to Cleveland for a lay-up, making the score, 35-29, with 4:48 to play in the quarter. Waters-Whitehead knocked down a jumper from the left wing, but Jefferson answered with a fast-break lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Nae Nae Castillo. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 37-31.

Cleveland split a pair of free throws, after being fouled on the floor by Castillo and Williams converted a pair of free throws on the next play to make the score, 40-31, with 2:30 left to play in the third quarter. Williams followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Davis and on their next possession, Williams was fouled on the floor by Putman, her third of the game. Williams converted both shots at the line, making the score, 4531.

Jefferson knocked down a jumper from the right wing, off of an assist from Williams and she followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of another assist from Williams stretching their lead to, 5031. Putman dropped in a layup in transition, off of the assist from Perez, but Jefferson drained a three from the top of the key at the buzzer to push their lead to, 53-35, going into the final quarter of play.

Williams opened the fourth quarter with a three from the top of the key, off of an assist from Williams and on their next possession, Saldana was fouled by Putman, her fourth foul of the game. Saldana split the attempts at the line, making the score, 57-35, with 7:18 to go in the game. Putman fouled out of the contest with 7:04 to play and Davis drained a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Williams, pushing their lead to, 60-35.

Waters-Whitehead responded with a three from the top of the key, off of an assist from Perez, but Williams answered with a three of her own from the left elbow, off of an assist from Jefferson and Cleveland followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Davis, extending their lead to, 6538.

Cleveland kept it going with a lay-up and Davis followed it up with a lay-up through contact to stretch their lead to, 69-38. With just under four minutes to play, Jefferson picked up a steal and dished the outlet pass ahead to Williams for a fast-break lay-up, making the score, 71-38. Jefferson followed it up with a drive along the left side for a layup, as Littlefield went on to take down the Lady Eagles, 73-38.

Jefferson and Williams led the team in scoring with 20 points apiece, while Cleveland joined in doublefigures scoring with 12 points and Saldana added 10 points. Davis tallied nine points and Rodriguez finished with two points in the contest.
