Lady Cats take down Lady Mules, 47-22

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team went on the road and took down the Muleshoe Lady Mules on Friday, 47-22, to claim their first district win of the season.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 1-1 in district play.

Nia Cleveland was fouled on a third-chance try by Araceli Cruz, earning a trip to the line. She converted one-of-two shots from the line to put the Lady Cats in front, 1-0. Yazlynn Ramirez was fouled on an attempt by Zalise Davis. She split the attempts at the line to tie the game, 1-1.

Madison Williams dropped in a floater in the lane to regain the lead for Littlefield and Amoni Jefferson followed it up with an outlet pass to Williams, who finished the play with a lay-up, making the score, 5-1, with 3:13 to play in the opening quarter. The Lady Cats kept it going, as Jefferson picked up a steal, taking it down court on the fast-break, as she pulled up for a jumper from the freethrow line, making the score, 7-1, as Muleshoe took a time out with 2:42 remaining in the quarter.

Out of the break, Williams banked in a floater from the right side, and with time winding down in the quarter, Williams was fouled on an attempt by Aniyee Martinez. She converted both shots at the line to push their lead to, 11-1, as the first quarter came to a close.

Jefferson opened the second frame with a put-back off of her own miss, but Cruz answered with a layup off of an assist from Sienna Buenrostro in transition, trimming the lead to, 133, with 6:15 to play in the half. Avery Cantu took a charge on Davis, giving her her second foul of the game. But, the Lady Cats would regain possession, as Williams sent the outlet pass down court to Jefferson, who finished the play with a reverse lay-up to extend their lead to, 15-3.

Sabryna Sayas was fouled on an attempt by Abbie Rodriguez with 4:22 to play in the half. She made one-of-two shots at the line, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:07 remaining in the half, leading the Lady Mules, 15-4. Out of the break, Martinez dropped in a lay-up for Muleshoe, and Jonah Zapata followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Sayas, cutting the lead to, 15-8.

Jefferson drained a three from the left elbow, and followed it up with an outlet pass on the next play to Williams, who finished at the rim with a lay-up, pushing their lead back out to, 20-8, with just over a minute to go in the half. Cantu dropped in a lay- up for Muleshoe, but Jefferson closed out the half with a three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Williams, making the score, 23-10, going into the locker room at halftime.

Out of the break, Cleveland was fouled on an attempt by Sophie Witten, earning a trip to the line to open the third quarter. She split the attempts, stretching the lead to, 24-10. Cantu dropped in a lay-up for the Lady Mules, but on the other end, Cobi Saldana was fouled on a three-point attempt by Zapata. She made one-of-three shots from the line to make the score, 2512.

Cantu knocked down a jumper from the elbow, as Muleshoe took a time out with 4:24 to play in the third quarter, trailing the Lady Cats, 25- 14. Out of the break, Davis drove the lane, bouncing a pass to Cleveland for a lay-up, and Williams followed it up with a defensive rebound, going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, making the score, 29-14, with 1:34 to play in the quarter.

With under a minute to go in the quarter, Cantu spun to the basket for a lay-up, but on the next play, Jefferson grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to close out the third quarter, making the score, 31-16.

Jefferson opened the fourth quarter with a three from the left elbow, but Martinez answered with a lay-up to make the score, 34-18, wit 5:35 left to play in the game. Cleveland was fouled on a put-back attempt by Witten, she converted both shots from the line to make the score, 3618. With 4:52 to play in the game, Buenrostro was fouled on a three-point attempt by Davis, her third foul of the game. She made two-of-three shots at the line, as the Lady Mules took a time out with the lead cut to, 36-20.

Out of the break, Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Tralee Turnbow, her second foul of the game. She sank both shots at the line and Williams followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Jefferson, stretching the lead back out to, 40-20. Cleveland kept the run going with a three from the right wing, making the score, 43-20, with just over two minutes to play in the game.

Martinez dropped in a layup, but Jefferson answered with a bucket on the other end, and David followed it up with a lay-up, as the Lady Cats took down the Lady Mules on the road, 4722.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Jefferson, who netted 19 points, and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Williams, who chipped in 14 points. Cleveland contributed nine points, while Saldana added three points, and Davis finished with two points.

The Lady Cats hosted Talkington on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Friday with a road game against Roosevelt.
