Lady Cats stumble against Nazareth in Slaton, 58-31

The Littlefield Lady Cats dropped their third game of the Slaton Tournament Friday afternoon, falling to the Nazareth Swiftettes, 58-31.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 1-2 in tournament play. Madison Brockman knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to open the contest for Nazareth and on their next possession, Madison Brockman drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Kambri Cleavinger for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 6-0, with 6:13 left to play in the opening quarter.

Madison Brockman kept the run going, driving the lane, this time kicking it over to Lexi Ramaekers for a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 6-0, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Madison Brockman dropped in a layup on the left side, stretching their lead to, 8-0, but Amoni Jefferson would get the Lady Cats on the board with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw, trimming the lead to, 8-3.

Cleavinger would drive the middle for a lay-up, but Jefferson answered on the other end with a pull-up from the left elbow, cutting the lead in half, 10-5. With just under two minutes to play in the first quarter, Jefferson hit Cobi Saldana on the fast-break for a layup, making the score, 10-7.

With 1:11 to go in the quarter, Madison Brockman drove the left side for a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Madison Williams. She converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 13-7. With under a minute to go in the quarter, Zalise Davis dropped in a lay-up and drew an and-one foul on the play. She could not convert the free throw, leaving the score, 13-9. But, in the closing seconds of the quarter, Jefferson would drive the lane, kicking it out to Williams, who buried a three from the left elbow to make it a one-point Nazareth lead, 13-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

Nia Cleveland dished the ball inside to Davis for a layup to put the Lady Cats in front, 14-13, as the second quarter got underway, but Madison Brockman would answer with a three from the right wing to put Nazareth back in front, 1614. With just under seven minutes to play in the half, Kate Brockman was fouled on an attempt by Jefferson. She made one-of-two shots from the line to make it a three point game, 17-14.

Nazareth was forced to take a time out with 5:14 to play in the half, after some backcourt pressure was applied by Williams and Saldana, and out of the break, Jolee Pigg lobbed a pass over the top of the defense to Cleavinger, who dropped in a lay-up, to extend their lead to, 19-14. Jefferson cut through the defense on the other end for a lay-up, but Pigg answered with a spin to the basket for a lay-up, extending the lead back out to, 21-16, with just under three minutes to play in the half.

Brynli Schilling dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Addie Schulte, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:23 to play in the half, trailing, 2316.

Out of the break, Jefferson dropped in a floater from the left side off of the assist from Davis, but Nazareth would respond, as McKinley Moore dropped in a lay-up, off of the inbound pass from Cleavinger under the basket, making the score, 25-18.

With time winding down in the quarter, Jefferson split a pair of free throws, after being fouled on an attempt by Schulte, but Cleavinger buried a thrree from the right elbow to close out the half with Nazareth in front, 28-18.

Nazareth opened the second half on a, 4-0, scoring run, but after a Nazareth time out, Williams drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Davis, trimming the lead to, 32-21, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:58 to play in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Williams dropped in a floater in the lane off of the assist from Saldana, but Schulte answered with a three from the left elbow and Ramaekers followed it up with a jumper in the lane off of the assist from Madison Brockman, pushing the lead to, 37-23.

Moore dropped in a layup in transition for Nazareth and Schulte closed out the third quarter with a three from the left wing, as Nazareth extended their lead to, 42-23, going into the final quarter of play.

The Swiftettes opened the final frame on a, 6-0, scoring run, before Davis was fouled on an attempt by Nazareth with 5:48 to play in the game. Davis converted both free throws and followed it up with a fast-break lay-up off of a steal to trim the lead to, 4827.

Cleavinger dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Madison Brockman, and on their next possession, Kate Brockman drew a blocking foul on Saldana, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to make the score, 52- 27. Schilling kept it going with a three from the right elbow, but Williams dished the outlet pass down court to Jefferson for the fast-break lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Moore. She converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 55-30.

With 1:32 to go in the game, Ramaekers knocked down a jumper in the lane and Pigg was fouled on an attempt by Jefferson. She made one- of- two shots from the line, stretching the lead to, 58-30. With under a minute to play Abby Rodriguez drew a shooting foul on Schulte. She made one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 5831, as Nazareth went on to take the contest.

Jefferson led the Lady Cats in scoring with 12 points, while Davis and Williams each finished with eight points, and Saldana added two points. Rodriguez finished with one point in the contest.
