Wolverines dropheart-breaker to booker, 75-58

The Springlake- Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night to the Booker Kiowas, 75-58, in the Class 1A-D1 Bi-district round of the play-offs.

The Wolverines got a solid return from Robert Flores on the opening kick-off, but they were flagged for holding, backing them up to their own seven-yard line to start their opening drive. On first down, Froylan Agundiz, flipped the ball out to Bryan Longoria on the right side for a seven-yard pick-up, and his next pass fell incomplete looking for Donovan Stiggers On third down, Agundiz would call his own number taking it up the middle before cutting it out to the left side, sprinting down the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown run with 8:25 to play in the opening quarter. The kick by Flores was blocked by the Kiowas, making the score, 6-0.

Flores booted the ball into the endzone for a touchback on the kick- off, giving Booker the ball at their own 20-yard line. Axel Valdivia carried the ball around the right side for a first down up to their 37-yard line and on the next play, Reydn Rosales took a sweep around the left side for five yards before being brought down by Longoria.

On the next play, Valdivia dropped back and hit Korbyn Vance deep down the right side for a 43-yard touchdown pass with just over seven minutes to go in the first quarter. The snap on the kick was bobbled and the Kiowas were stopped, leaving the score, 6-6.

The next Booker kick-off rolled out of bounds, giving Springlake-Earth the ball at their own 30- yard line. Agundiz, again, called his own number taking the ball up the middle, cutting it out to the left for a big gain, down to the Booker 14-yard line. On the next play, Agundiz dropped back and hit Flores on the 14-yard touchdown pass with 6:15 to play in the quarter. The kick from Flores was good, pushing the lead to, 14-6.

Booker got the ball back after the kick-off at their own 22-yard line, but on first down, Reydn Rosales took a carry up the middle, but he had the ball stripped out and it was recovered by Longoria at the Booker 28yard line with 5:26 to go in the first quarter.

Springlake-Earth was unable to capitalize on the turnover, as Agundiz’s pass fell incomplete looking for Stiggers on fourth down, as they turned the ball over on downs with just over four minutes to go in the quarter.

Booker took over at their own 14-yard line and on second and long from their own 11-yard line, Valdivia dropped back and found Reydn Rosales deep over the middle for a 79-yard touchdown pass with 3:20 to play in the quarter. The kick from Marco Flores was blocked by the Wolverines, keeping Springlake-Earth in front, 14-12.

Josiah Castillo fielded the onside kick attempt at the Springlake-Earth 26-yard line, as Stiggers carried the ball around the right side for 12 yards on first down. On second and three, Agundiz dropped back and Flores down the right side for the 42-yard touchdown pass with 2:25 to play in the first quarter. The kick was blocked, leaving the score, 2012.

Booker wasted no time responding after taking possession at their own 26-yard line. Valdivia hit Reyden Rosales with a shovel pass, as he got loose, taking it down the Booker sideline for a 53-yard touchdown with just over two minutes to go in the quarter. The kick from Marco Flores was good, tying the game, 20-20.

The Wolverines got the ball back after the kick-off at their own 20-yard line, as Agundiz kept it on first down, taking it up to their own 38-yard line for a fresh set of downs. Stiggers picked up three-yards on a first-down run and two plays later, Agundiz kept it on a run up the middle for a big gain, but at the end of the run he had the ball stripped, but it was recovered by Castillo at the Booker 17yard line, as the first quarter came to a close.

Two plays later, Agundiz floated a pass to Longoria on the right side, as he turned it up field for the 17-yard touchdown with 9:47 to play in the first half. The kick from Flores was good, putting the Wolverines back in front, 28-20.

Booker got the ball back at their own 15-yard line, after Valdivia was brought down on the return by Levi Hill.

The Kiowas’ drive would stall out at their 22-yard line, and on fourth and eight, Valdivia’s pass to Marco Flores was stopped short of the sticks for a turnover on downs with 7:27 to play in the half.

The Wolverines took over at the Booker 26-yard line. Valdivia dropped an interception on first down and two plays later, Agundiz avoided a sack in the backfield and found Castillo down the left side for a first down at the 10-yard line setting up first and goal. On first down, Stiggers took a run up the middle breaking a tackle on his way to a 10-yard touchdown run with 6:20 to play in the second quarter. The kick was good from Robert Flores, pushing their lead to, 36-20.

Booker was able to take their next possession down to the Springlake-Earth 12-yard line, but on first and goal, Brayland Gonzales fumbled a toss in the backfield and it was recovered by Castillo for a turnover with 4:23 to play in the half.

The Wolverines took over at their own 20-yard line, as Agundiz connected with Kaylob Frietze with a pass to the left, moving the ball up to their 37-yard for a fresh set of downs. Stiggers carried the ball across midfield on the next play to the Booker 39-yard line and Longoria caught a screen pass to bring up third and two from the Booker 30-yard line.

Agundiz called his own number on third down and took the ball down to the 26-yard line to move the chains again for Springlake-Earth. The Wolverines got flagged for an illegal forward pass, making it second and 20, but on the next play, Agundiz hit Stiggers on a throwback for 12-yards, as they took a time out with 1:04 to play in the half.

Out of the break, Agundiz picked up two yards on a run up the middle and on fourth and six,Agundiz dropped back and found Frietze on the right side for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds to play in the half. The kick from Robert Flores was off the crossbar, leaving the score, 42-20.

Reydn Rosales would field a short kick-off, as he took it down the Booker sideline for a touchdown with six seconds to play in the half. The kick from Marco Flores was good, trimming the lead to, 42-28.

Booker would get the ball back to open the second half, as they got a big return from Reydn Rosales, taking it up to their own 35-yard line.

Reydn Rosales carried the ball on first down, but he was stopped for a two-yard loss by Agundiz. Marco Flores dropped back and hit Vance on the left side for a big play down to the Springlake-Earth 19-yard line for a fresh set of downs. On first down, Marco Flores hit Heydn Rosales for a 14yard pass to bring up second and one from the five-yard line.

On the next play, Marco Flores hit Jordan Andrade for the five-yard touchdown pass. The kick was good, cutting the lead to, 42-36.

Springlake-Earth would take the ball down to the Booker five-yard line on their next drive, but on fourth and goal, Agundiz’s pass was dropped by Frietze in the back of the endzone for a turnover on downs with just over four minutes to go in the third quarter.

Booker would take over at their own five-yard line, marching 75 yards, capping off the drive 23-yard touchdown pass, as Marco Flores hit Reydn Rosales for the touchodwn with under a minute to go in the third quarter. The kick was good, slicing theWolverine lead to, 44-42.

Springlake-Earth’s next drive would take the game into the fourth quarter, but on fourth and 10,Agundiz hit Stiggers with a pass, but he was stopped just short of the line to gain for a turnover on downs, giving Booker the ball at the Springlake-Earth 35-yard line.

Three plays later, Reydn Rosales would score on a seven-yard touchdown run up the middle with 7:34 to play in the game. The one-point conversion pass from Marco Flores was good, as he connected with Reydn Rosales, making the score, 51-42.

Gonzales recovered the onside kick for Booker and on their first play from scrimmage, Reydn Rosales broke loose up the middle for a touchdown with 7:26 to play in the game. The kick was good, making the score, 59-42.

Springlake-Earth would field the kick-off taking over on offense at their own 25-yard line. Just two plays into the drive, Agundiz would take off up the middle cutting out to the left for a 45-yard touchdown run. The kick from Robert Flores was good, cutting the lead to, 59-50, with 6:25 to play in the game.

The onside kick try by the Wolverines was returned by Gael Alvarez to the Wolverine 26-yard line and on first and 15, Reydn Rosales broke loose around the left side for a 26yard touchdown run with 6:17 left to play in the game. The kick was good, making the score, 67-50.

Springlake-Earth took over at the Booker 37-yard line, as they took the ball down field, capping the drive off with a pass fromAgundiz deep down the middle that was caught by Frietze on fourth and long for the 22-yard touchdown. The kick from Robert Flores was good, trimming the lead to, 6758.

Booker would answer with a 12-yard touchdown pass, as Marco Flores found Vance for the score with just over three minutes remaining. The kick was good, pushing their lead back out to, 75-58.

Agundiz would get picked off by Gonzales with 12 seconds left, as the Wolverines watched their season come to an end at Roughrider Stadium.
