The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team closed out the regular season with a win on senior night on Friday over the Ralls Jackrabbits, 60-0.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 8-2 overall, 4-1 in dsitrict play.
The Hornets ended up with the ball to begin the first quarter, after an onside kick was recovred by Aybran Granados, giving Sudan the ball at the Ralls 49-yard line.
The offense came out on to the field, as Caleb Groetken dropped back and just overthrew Aspen Reyher deep down the right side on first down. Kyler Edwards carried the ball up the middle for a first down, taking it down to the Ralls 38-yard line, and on the next play, Cal Carter broke a few tackles for a 38-yard touchdown run with 11:10 left to play in the opening quarter. The PAT from Groetken was good, making the score, 7-0.
Ralls took over after a short kick return from Ilias Menjares at their own 22yard line, but the drive would stall out and on fourth down a bad snap on the punt was picked up by Raul Beltran, who tried to run for the first down, but he was stopped short by the Hornet defense for a turnover on downs with 9:27 to play in the first quarter.
Sudan took over at the Ralls 22- yard line, as Groetken called his own number on first down taking it around the left side to set up first and goal from the four-yard line for the Hornets. Kincaid Boehning would carry it up the middle for the four-yard touchdown on the next play with just over nine minutes to play in the first quarter. The PAT was good from Groetken, pushing their lead to, 14-0.
Domm Villalba muffed the next kick-off from Groetken and he was stuffed at their own eight-yard line by Kyler Edwards, forcing Ralls to start deep in their own territory.
On third and 10 from their own eight-yard line, Beltran was sacked as he fumbled the ball and it was recovered in the endzone for a Sudan touchdown with just over eight minutes remaining in the quarter. The PAT was good, stretching the lead to, 21-0.
Ralls would go three-andout on their next possession and the Hornet offense showed no signs of slowing down, as Groetken hit Kooper Edwards with a pass, as he took the ball across midfield to the Ralls 34-yard line for a fresh set of downs for the Hornets. On the next play, Carter carried the ball around the right side for a 34-yard touchdown run with 5:38 remaining in the quarter. The PAT was good, making the score, 28-0.
Ralls was able to drive the ball up near midfield on their next possession, but on fourth and four, they were forced to punt it away, giving Sudan the ball at their own 34-yard line with one minute to play in the first quarter.
A pair of runs from Brian Delgado and Kyler Edwards gave the Hornets first and 10 at their own 44-yard line to start the second quarter. Brian Delgado carried it again on first down, taking it across midfield to the Ralls 36-yard line. After an incomplete pass on first down looking for Boehning, Kyler Edwards took a carry up the middle, cutting it out to the right sie for a big gain down to the 15-yard line.
A few plays later, Groetken would scramble to his left for a three-yard touchdwon run with 9:42 to play in the half. His PAT was good, extending the lead to, 35-0.
Ralls’ woes on offense continued as they went three-and-out on their next possession, punting the ball away with 7:28 to play in the half. Carter fielded the punt and returned it down the left side of the field to the Ralls 12-yard line.
Sudan would score on their first play of the drive, as Kyler Edwards ran it in for the 12-yard score with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. The PAT was no good, leaving the score, 41-0.
Ralls would be forced to punt again from the own 11yard line with 4:40 remaining in the half, but the punt was shanked by Beltran, giving Sudan the ball at the Ralls 17-yard line.
Brian Delgado would pick up six yards on first down and Halen Ruiz would carry it up the middle, taking it down to the one-yard line to set up first and goal for Sudan. Two plays later, Javier Avila would punch it in for the one-yard score with 2:50 to play in the half. The PAT was no good, leaving the score, 47-0.
The score would stand going into the locker room at halftime.
Ralls got the ball at their own 35- yard line as the pooch kick from Groetken rolled out of bounds, but the Jackrabbits were unable to capitalize, going three-andout with Beltran punting the ball away with 9:35 to play in the third quarter.
Ruiz carried the ball on back-to-back plays, taking it down to the Ralls 26-yard line for a fresh set of downs and Haden Provence connected with Will Armstrong on a pass to the left for a first down, down to the 12yard line. Ruiz picked up three yards on a run to the left and on the next play, Haden Provence would connect with Miles Ledbetter for the nine-yard touchdown pass with 5:24 to play in the third. The PAT from Groetken was off the upright, leaving the score, 530.
A high, short kick from Groetken on the kick-off was recovered by Samuel Briseno at the Ralls 34-yard line, as Sudan’s offense came back out onto the field.
Ruiz would get three consecutive carries, as Sudan took the ball down to the Ralls 5-yard line to set up first and goal. They were flagged for a false start backing them up to first and goal from the 10-yard line, but Ruiz would pick up three yards on first down and two more on second down, as the third quarter came to a close.
The Hornets opened the third quarter with third and goal from the five-yard line, as Ruiz punched it in up the middle for the five- yard score with 11:50 remaining in the game. The PAT from Groetken was good, pushing their lead to, 60-0.
The Hornets would go on to take the victory over Ralls on Senior Night.
The Hornets will take on Farwell on Friday at Bobcat Stadium in Dimmit in the Class 2A Bi-district round of the football play-offs.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
