Hornets drop heartbreaker to Hale Center in OT, 34-28

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team lost a slugfest in overtime on Friday to the Hale Center Owls, 34-28, in Sudan.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to, 6-2 overall, 2-1 in District play.

The Hornets totaled 329 yards of offense, including 272 rushing yards and 57 passing yards.

Hale Center got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 41-yard touchdown through the air, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 6-0, going into quarter number two.

Sudan answered in the second frame, as Caleb Groetken rushed for a one-yard touchdown followed by the PAT to put the Hornets in front, 7-0. He would add a 78-yard touchdown run and the PAT later in the quarter to take a, 14-6, lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, Groetken connected with Christian Delgado for a seven-yard touchdown pass. Kyler Edwards rushed for the twopoint conversion to put the Hornets in front, 22-6. The Owls would respond later in the quarter with a three-yard touchdown pass followed by the twopoint conversion, cutting the lead to, 22-14, going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Hale Center would score on a 21yard passing touchdown, followed by the two-point conversion to tie the game, 22-22, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, Hale Center struck first with a twoyard rushing touchdown, but the failed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 2822. Groetken would answer with a 19-yard rushing touchdown, but his PAT was no good, leaving the score tied, 2828.

Hale Center would punch in a one-yard score to take the contest, 34-28, in overtime.

Offensively, Groetken finished the game 6-16 passing for 57 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added 27 carries for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

In the rushing game, Brian Delgado added 11 carries for 45 yards and Kyler Edwards chipped in 20 carries for 40 yards.

In the receiving game, Kyler Edwards tallied one catch for 41 yards, while Christian Delgado added one catch for seven yards and a touchdown. Cal Carter contributed two catches for five yards and Kooper Edwards added two catches for four yards.

Defensively, Andrew Larson finished with eight tackles, two for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery, while Gabe Lopez tallied five tackles, two for loss and one sack. Javier Avila contributed 12 tackles and a fumble recovery, while Kincaid Boehning finished with six tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Hornets will be at Morton on Friday to take on the Indians.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
