Hornets blast Crosbyton, 50-6

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team won their district- opener over Crosbyton on Friday night, 50-6.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-1 overall on the year, 1-0 in district play.

The Hornets totaled 422 yards of offense, including 343 rushing yards and 79 passing yards.

The Hornets got the game going in the opening quarter, as Caleb Groetken connected with Aspen Reyher for a 25-yard touchdown pass. The PAT from Groetken was good, making the score, 7-0. Later in the first quarter, Kyler Edwards rushed for a two- yard touchdown and Javier Avila followed it up with a oneyard touchdown. Groetken drilled both PAT’s to put the Hornets up, 21-0, going into quarter number two.

Sudan kept the offense going in the second frame, as Edwards rushed for a 10yard touchdown to open the second quarter. Groetken followed it up with the PAT to push their lead to, 28-0. Groetken would score later in the quarter on an 11-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 34-0. Edwards would find the endzone for a third time in the first half, this one an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Groetken nailed the PAT to make the score, 41-0, going into the locker room at halftime.

The score would stand until the fourth quarter, when Groetken booted a 34-yard field goal through the uprights to extend the Sudan lead to, 44- 0. Crosbyton would break through on the scoreboard with a 36-yard rushing touchdown, but they failed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 44-6.

Sudan would close out the contest with a 49-yard rushing touchdown from Haden Provence, but the Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, as they went on to take the contest, 50-6.

Offensively, Groetken finished the game 3-5 passing for 71 yards and a touchdown, while also adding seven carries for 92 yards and one touchdown.

In the rushing attack, Provence tallied four carries for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Edwards finished with 10 carries for 57 yards and three touchdowns. Avila contributed five carries for 38 yards and a touchdown, while Brian Delgado added seven carries for 47 yards and Cal Carter chipped in four carries for 34 yards.

Reyher led the receiving game with one catch for 25 yards and a score, while Kincaid Boehning chipped in one catch for 31 yards and Carter added one catch for 15 yards.

Defensively, Boehning, Carter and Andrew Larson led the way with six tackles apiece, while Max Lopez added five tackles and two sacks. Gabriel Lopez chipped in five tackles and one sack, while Avila contributed five tackles. Gabriel Lopez also had two fumble recoveries and Haden Provence had an interception.
