Fillies hang on to win 5-set thriller over Talkington, 3-2

The Olton Fillies’ varsity volleyball team held on home Tuesday night to win a five- set thriller over Talkington, 3-2.

With the win, the Fillies improve to 8-13 overall on the year.

The Fillies jumped out to a, 13-11, lead in set one, after a serve from Kaitlyn Avalos went un-returned by the Lady Warriors. Denisse Alvarado would send a kill attempt sailing out of bounds and the Fillies were called for four hits on the next play to tie the set, 1313.

Alvarado would respond with a tip in front of the block attempt from Talkington, but her next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 14-14. Taryn Smith delivered a block for a kill and the Lady Warriors sent a hit into the net on the next play to make the score, 16-14. Smith sent a hit into the net on the next play, but the serve from Talkington on the next se- quence fell short of the net, pushing the lead to, 17-15. Talkington sent a hit out of bounds and Llama Ramirez dropped in a tip for a kill to push their lead to, 19-15. Smith had a kill tipped out of bounds by the Lady Warriors, as Talkington took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Kambri Ruiz delivered a kill over the Talkington blockers, and the Lady Warriors were called for four hits on the next play, stretching the lead to, 22 15. Talkington sent a hit into the net and Smith and Ramirez followed it up with a block for a kill, before Allison Rivera served up an ace to close out the set, 25 15, putting Olton in front, 1 0, in the match. In set two, Alvarado delivered a kill to open things up and Talkington was called for being on the net making the score, 20. Olton delivered a kill and Alvarado followed it up with a tip at the net for a kill off of a long dig from Talkington, making the score, 4- 0. The Lady Warriors had a tip land out of bounds, before Smith sent a serve short of the net, trimming the lead to, 5- 1.

Talkington tipped the net for an ace, but their next kill attempt landed out of bounds, making the score, 6- 2. The Lady Warriors responded with a kill off of Smith, but they would be called for four hits on the next play, pushing the lead to, 7- 3. Talkington would regain the serve after dropping in a tip for a kill and a few plays later they would tie the set, 88, after a hit was tipped out of bounds by Ruiz.

Olton took a time out and out of the break, Barbara Gallegos dropped in a tip for a kill, but the lead was shortlived, as her next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 9- 9. Talkington would score a kill, but on the next play, their hit landed out of bounds on the sideline, keeping the set tied, 1010. Talkington would drop a tip over Ruiz for a kill before sending a serve short of the net to make the score, 11- 11.

The Lady Warriors sent back- to- back tips into the net, before Alvarado was blocked for a kill to make the score, 13- 12. Alvarado would fire right back with a kill past the back row and Ramirez tipped the net for a kill off of the free ball from Talkington, making the score, 15-12. The Lady Warriors would bounce back with a tip over Gallegos for a kill, and Gallegos would sent a tip into the net on the next play, cutting the lead to, 15-14.

Talkington’s next serve sailed out of bounds and Alvarado followed it up with a tip off of the Talkington block attempt for a kill, stretching their lead back out to, 16- 15. The set went back- and- forth until Talkington sent a hit into the net to tie things up, 22-22.

The Lady Warriors would have a hit land out of bounds on the sideline, before Ramirez followed it up with a kill to push the lead to, 24- 22. Allison Rivera would close out the set with an ace to take the set, 2522, putting Olton up, 2-0 in the match.

Talkington would battle back to take set three, 19- 25, and set four, 17- 25, to force a tie- breaker set five.

Talkington was called for four hits to open set five and they sent a hit outside of the foul pole on the next play to give Olton a, 2- 0, advantage. They were again called for four hits, before Alvarado sent a tip into the net, making the score, 3- 1. The Lady Warriors delivered a kill in front of Avalos, but their next serve landed out of bounds on the sideline, pushing the lead to, 4- 2.

Talkington would sent a kill sailing out of bounds and on the next play, they were blocked by Alvarado for a kill, stretching the lead to, 62. Talkington would not go away, as they delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Ramirez, however their hit on the next play went into the net, making the score, 7- 3.

Talkington scored a kill off of the block attempt from Zayda Gonzales and Gallegos, but they sent a hit into the net on the next play, making the score, 8-4. Alyssa Rivera served up an ace, before sending her next serve short of the net, making the score, 9- 5. Talkington scored backto- back kills, before Smith delivered a block for a kill to make the score, 10- 8.

Gonzales had a kill tipped out of bounds by the Lady Warriors and on the next play, Ruiz and Gonzales delivered a block for a kill to make the score, 12- 8, as Talkington took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Kaybree Ramon’s serve was returned out of bounds by the Lady Warriors and on the next play, a dig from Alyssa Rivera was hit into the net by Talkington to push their lead to, 14- 8. Ramon sent a serve short of the net, but the following serve from Talkington landed out of bounds on the sideline, as Olton took the set, 15- 9, and the match, 3- 2.

The Fillies were at Loop on Saturday to take on the Lady Horns. Results were not available at press time. They will close out the pre-district schedule on Tuesday on the road against Littlefield.

First set is set to begin at 6 p. m.
