The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team stayed unbeaten on Friday night, taking down the Tahoka Bulldogs at home, 40-12.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-0 overall on the year.
The Hornets totaled 401 yards of offense, including 234 rushing yards and 167 passing yards.
The Hornets scored the lone touchdown of the opening quarter on a two-yard rushing score. The kick from Caleb Groetken was good, making the score, 7-0, heading into quarter number two.
In the second frame, the Hornets scored again on the ground, this time from fouryards out, making the score, 13-0, after the missed PAT. Groetken would find Christian Delgado later in the quarter on a 42-yard touchdown strike to make the score, 20-0, after his PAT, going into the locker room at halftime.
Groetken opened the second half with an 18-yard rushing touchdown followed by the PAT, pushing their lead to, 27-0, and Sudan would strike once more on the ground on a three-yard touchdown run, making the score, 34-0.
Tahoka would respond later in the third quarter, as Uzziah Martinez scored on a 42-yard rushing touchdown, but the Bulldogs missed on the two-point conversion, making the score, 34-6, heading into the fourth quarter.
Dante Garcia opened the fourth quarter with a threeyard rushing touchdown, but again, Tahoka missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 34-12. Groetken would put the nail in the coffin, as he broke loose around the left side for a 69-yard rushing touchdown. Sudan missed the two-point conversion, as they went on to take the contest, 40-12.
Offensively, Groetken finished the game 8-12 passing for 167 yards and one touchdown, while adding 12 carries for 124 yards and four touchdowns.
Kyler Edwards added six carries for 47 yards, while Cal Carter tallied six carries for 21 yards and a touchdown, and Javier Avila chipped in six carries for 19 yards. Kincaid Boehning also added three carries for 15 yards.
In the receiving game, Kooper Edwards finished with two catches for 62 yards, while Carter tallied four catches for 52 yards and Delgado added one catch for 42 yards and a score.
Defensively, Aspen Reyher tallied, six tackles and an interception, while Haden Provence and Avila each notched 10 total tackles, and Zach Montes contributed eight tackles. Carter tallied seven tackles, while Aybran Granados and Boehning each finished with six tackles.
The Hornets will be at Ropes on Friday to take on the Eagles.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
