Wildcats take home-opener over Mustangs, 34-14

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team improved to 2-0 on Friday, taking their home-opener over the Denver City Mustangs, 34-14, at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcat offense totaled 417 yards, including 258 passing yards and 159 rushing yards, while holding Denver City to just 125 yards of total offense.

Denver City got the scoring going in the first quarter, as Darrell Bayona scored on an eight- yard touchdown run, that was followed with the PAT from Jacob Acosta to put the Mustangs up, 7-0. But, it would be short-lived, as the Wildcats would answer, as Sammy Saenz hit Gabriel Mata for a three-yard touchdown pass. The PAT from Jayden Barrio was good, making the score, 7-7, heading into the second frame.

The Wildcats took over in the second quarter, as Saenz opened it up with a threeyard touchdown run that was followed by the Barrio PAT to put them in front, 147. Littlefield would regain possession, and Jonas Camacho would join in on the scoring, rushing for a 17yard touchdown. The PAT from Barrio was good, pushing their lead to, 21-7.

Later in the quarter, Barrio would catch a 50-yard touchdown pass from Saenz to make the score, 28-7, after his PAT. Barrio would close out the first half with a 24-yard field goal, making the score, 31-7, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, Barrio would boot a 29-yard field goal through the uprights for the game’s only points of the quarter, making the score, 34-7, going into the final quarter of play.

In the final frame, Bayona would rush for a 13-yard touchdown run followed by Acosta’s PAT, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 34-14.

Offensively, Saenz finished the game 15-34 passing for 258 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 15 carries for 57 yards and a score on the ground.

Daniel Rojas led the rushing attack with 16 carries for 58 yards, while Camacho tallied seven carries for 26 yards and a touchdown and Ben Castillo added three carries for 21 yards.

In the receiving game, Barrio tallied five catches for 157 yards and one touchdown, while Mata chipped in two catches for 49 yards and a score, and Blayton Soliz contributed five catches for 32 yards.

Defensively, the Wildcats forced four turnovers, including three fumbles and an interception.

Castillo and Camacho led the way with 10 tackles a piece. Camacho had six solo tackles, while Castillo had four solo tackles and two for a loss. Saenz tallied nine tackles, four solo and one for a loss, while Jacob Silvas added eight tackles, three solo and one for a loss.

Barrio contributed eight tackles, four solo, a forced fumble an an interception, while Soliz chipped in three tackles, one solo, a forced fumble and a fumble recover, and James Lockridge tallied a fumble recovery.

The Wildcats host Abernathy on Friday at Wildcat Stadium.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
