Olton falls to Klondike in Lfd. Tournament-Opener

The Olton Fillies’ varsity volleyball team fell to the Klondike Lady Cougars on Thursday, 0-2, in their Littlefield Tournament-opener.

With the loss, the Fillies fall to 2-7 overall on the year.

In set one, Klondike jumped out to a, 0-3, lead before Barbara Gallegos had a tip fall in for a kill to trim the lead to, 1-3. Kiley Casas answered with a kill off of the block attempt by Denisse Alvarado, stretching the lead to, 1-4, as Klondike regained the serve. Grace Stevens delivered a kill off of Allison Rivera, sparking a sevenpoint rally for the Lady Cougars, extending their lead to, 1-11.

Casas had a tip fall short of the net for Klondike, but Olton couldn’t capitalize, as Llama Ramirez’s serve fell short of the net, pushing the lead to, 2-12. Zayda Gonzalez had a kill attempt land out of bounds and Casas followed it up with an ace off of Taryn Smith to make the score, 2-15. Olton scored to regain the serve, but Klondike would answer, as Stevens delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Gonalez, making the score, 3-16.

Malia Arismendez dropped in a tip on the sideline for a kill and Stevens followed it up with an ace off of Kaitlyn Avalos, stretching the lead to, 3-18. Gonzalez was called for being on the net for Olton, but Danika Cagle had a kill attempt land out of bounds on the sideline, trimming the lead to, 419.

Kambri Ruiz delivered an ace on the back boundary line, but Casas responded with a tip past Gallegos, stretching the lead to, 520. Rylee Montez and Gonzalez exchanged serves short of the net and Smith was blocked by Arismendez and M’Kynleigh Barron for a kill to stretch the lead to, 6-24.

Gallegos had a hit fall in for a kill and Klondike was called for four hits on the next play, trimming the lead to, 8-24. A long dig by Montez was killed at the net by Alvarado, but on the next play, Barron was blocked by Ramirez, but the ball landed out of bounds, as Klondike took set one, 9-25.

Klondike opened set two on an, 0-3, scoring run, before Smith delivered a kill past Arismendez to make the score, 1-3. Barron tipped a ball past Alvarado for a kill, pushing the lead to, 1-4. The Lady Cougars couldn’t capitalize, as Arismendez sent a serve sailing out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 2-4.

Arismendez dropped a kill in front of Avalos, but again Barron’s next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 3-5. Cagle would answer with a kill off of a long dig from Allison Rivera, sparking a four-point rally for the Lady Cougars, that ended when a serve from Casas fell short of the net, making the score, 4-9.

Ramirez delivered a kill over Cagle, but the next serve from Alvarado sailed out of bounds, stretching the lead to, 5- 10. Ramirez sent a hit out of bounds, but on the next play Alvarado had a hit fall in front of Jo Bellows for a kill, trimming the lead to, 6-11. Cagle would answer with a kill in front of Kambri Ruiz and Montez followed it up with an ace, sparking an eight-point rally for the Lady Cougars, making the score, 6-19.

Montez sent a serve sailing out of bounds to end the rally and on the next play a tip from Barron landed out of bounds on the sideline to cut the lead to, 8-19. Smith dropped a kill in front of Stevens and on the next play, Bellows was blocked by Smith for a kill to trim the lead to, 10-19. Arismendez sent a hit into the net on a dig, but she would answer with a kill in front of the block attempt by Smith on the next play, making the score, 11-20. Barron was called for being on the net for Klondike, but Arismendez followed it up with a kill off of the block attempt by Gallegos and she kept it going with an ace, making the score, 12-22. Stevens sent a kill over the boundary line to turn the serve over to Olton, but it was short-lived, as Gallegos’ serve landed out of bounds, making the score, 13-23.

Stevens sent a kill attempt sailing out of bounds for Klondike and on the next play, Cagle was blocked by Alvarado for a kill, trimming the lead to, 15-23. Stevens answered with a kill off of Allison Rivera, but Alvarado fired right back with a kill of her own on the next play, making the score, 16-24. Gonzalez followed it up with backto- back aces for the Fillies, but on the next play, Cagle delivered a kill off of Ramirez to end the set, 1825, and the match, 0-2.
