Wolverines open district with a, 9-8, victory over Crosbyton

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team opened district play on Saturday with a, 98, home victory over Crosbyton.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to, 5-7 overall, 1-0 in district play.

Salazar grounded out to Donovan Stiggers at first base to begin the game for Crosbyton, but Guerrero singled to right field and Marquez drew a walk, after Guerrero advanced to third on a passed ball, putting runners on the corners for the Chiefs. Vega hit a sac grounder to Froylan Agundiz at shortstop, who got the out at first, as Guerrero scored and Marquez advanced to second, making the score, 1-0.

Tyler Tanaro would get R Salas to strike out swinging to retire the side. The Wolverines had nothing going in the home half of the first inning, and in the top of the second, Tanaro got A Salas to strike out swinging for out number one, before giving up back-toback walks to Scott and Barela.

The runners advanced to second and third on a pitch, before Reyes struck out swinging for out number two. Scott would scored on a passed ball to stretch their lead to, 2-0, before Tanaro got Salazar to strike out swinging to retire the side.

Jacob Alvarez gave the Wolverines a base runner in the bottom of the second inning, after reaching on an error by Scott on the mound, which allowed Alvarez to take second on the play. Timothy Tovar drew a walk, putting runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth, but Nathan Ramos struck out swinging for out number one.

Luis Fuentes drew a walk to load the bases, but Stiggers struck out swinging for out number two. Agundiz picked him up with a three-RBI double to right field to put the Wolverines in front, 3-2. Robert Flores drew a walk and Agudniz scored on a passed ball to stretch their lead to, 4-2, before Flores was caught trying to steal home to the inning.

In the top of the third inning, Guerrero singled up the middlea and Marquez drew a walk, before Vega struck out swinging for out number one. The runners advanced to second and third on a pitch, before R Salas struck out swinging for out number two.

A Salas reached base on a dropped third strike that got by Tovar behind the plate, allowing Marquez to score, tying the game, 4-4. Scott drew a walk and Barela was hit by a pitch, before Reyes drew an RBI- walk to put Crosbyton back in front, 5-4. Salzar singled on an error by Bryan Longoria at second base, as two runs scored to push Crosbyton’s lead to, 7-4. Guerrero was thrown out at first by Tovar on a dropped third strike to retire the side.

In the home half of the third, Tanar drew a walk and Longoria and Alvarez were both hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Wolverines. Tovar drew a walk to bring in a run and trim the lead to, 7-5, and Ramos knocked a two-RBI double to right field to score Longoria and Alvarez to tie the game, 7-7.

Fuentes struck out swinging for out number one and Stiggers hit into a fielder’s choice to Salazar at shortstop, who got Tovar out at the pltae trying to score for out number two. Stiggers stole second before Agundiz singled through the right side, driving in two runs to put the Wolverines in front, 97. Flores would pop up to A Salas at second base to end the inning.

The score remained until the top of the sixth inning when Scott doubled to right field and took third on an error by Ramos to lead things off for Crosbyton. Marquez grounded out to Longoria at third base, as Scott scored to cut the lead to, 9-8. Vega reached on an error by Ramors in right field and R Salas and A Salas were walked by Agundiz to load the bases.

However, Scott would pop up to Stiggers at first base, who stepped on the bag for the double play to retire the side.

After not scoring in the bottom of the sixth, the Wolverines took the field on defense in the top of the seventh looking to close out their first district ballgame.

Barela singled to left field, but Agundiz got Reyes and Salazar to strike out swinging for two outs. The Wolverines intentionally walked Scott, before getting Marquez to ground out in front of the plate, as it was fielded by Tanaro and thrown to first for the out to end the game.

Tanaro went three innings for the Wolverines on the mound, giving up two hits, six walks and seven runs, one earned, while striking out eight batters. Agundiz went four innings on the mound, giving up three hits, three walks and one run, while striking out six batters.

The Wolverines were at Borden County on Monday and they will be back in action on Saturday, April 5th to take on Petersburg.

First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
