Mustangs fall to Ropes, 15-1

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team fell in their first game of the Lamb County Classic on Thursday, 15-1.

Ryland Keith drew a lead off walk for the Eagles and took second on a pitch, before Mason Marmolejo knocked a double to right field. Kade Franklin followed it up with a two-RBI triple to right-center field to put the Eagles in front, 2-0, and Trak Crow kept it going with an RBI-single that fell in shallow right field, pushing the lead to, 30.

Maddux Sierra hit into a fielder’s choice to Paytn Jimenez at shortstop, who got the out at second for out number one. Brady Bryan drew a walk, as Bode Franklin came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Colton Mortensen hit a short fly to Jett Tomsu at second base, who tossed it to Jimenez at second for the double play to retire the side.

Jimenez led off the home-half of the first for Olton with a single to left field and Jaxon Tomsu laid down a sacrifice bunt on the thirdbase side that was fielded by Cutter Stumbo, who got the out at first, as Jimenez advanced to second on the play. Callen Burns, though, would strike out swinging and Jett Tomsu went down looking to end the inning.

Brayden Hogg singled to rightcenter field to get the second inning going and Kanon Buckner drew a walk before Kieth cleared the bases with a three- run homerun to right field, pushing their lead to, 6-0. Marmolejo popped up in front of the plate, the ball was played by the catcher Fabian Gutierrez, who got the out at first for out number one.

Kade Franklin singled to left field, but Crow popped up to Jett Tomsu at second base for out number two. Sierra ripped an RBIdouble to right-center field to extend their lead to, 7-0, and Bryan followed it up with an RBI-triple to left-center field to make the score, 8-0, before Mortensen lined out to Alan Vasquez in right field to retire the side.

Vasquez singled on an error by Kieth at shortstop to give the Mustangs a runner in the bottom of the second inning, but Victor Reyes bunted foul on strike three for out number one. Copper Clayton bunted foul on strike three for out number two, as Vasquez took second on a pitch. He would take third on a passed ball and Gutierrez drove him in with a single to third on an error by Kade Franklin, trimming the lead to 8-1. Dax Light struck out looking to end the inning.

Hogg led off the third inning for Ropes with a ground-rule double to left field and took third on a pitch, before Buckner drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Eagles. Buckner took second on a passed ball and Kieth knocked a two-RBI single through the right side, taking second on the throw home from Vasquez, making the score, 10-1.

Marmolejo flew out to Vasquez in right field, as he was able to hold the runner at second with one out. Kieth took second on a pitch and Kade Franklin flew out to Noe Mendoza in center field for out number two, as the runner at third tagged up and scored to push the lead to, 11-1. Crow singled on an error by Jett Tomsu, but the relay to third was in time to get an out to retire the side.

Ropes would add two runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning, taking the contest over Olton, 15-1.

Light started on the mound and went three innings for the Mustangs, giving up 10 hits, four walks and 11 runs. Jimenez pitched two innings, giving up three hits, three walks and four runs, three earned, while earning two strikeouts.
