The Sudan Nettes’ varsity softball team took down the Lockney Lady Horns on Tuesday, 19-7.
With the win, the Nettes improved to 5-5-1 on the year.
Haylee Toscano was hit by a pitch to begin the game, as Sudan got their lead-off batter aboard. Haylee Toscano stole second and third, but was caught stealing home for out number one. Andrea Williams drew a walk and Danielle Mitchell was hit by a pitch, before Daniella Ramirez hit a sacrifice grounder to Victoria Luna at shortstop, who got the out at first, as Williams scored and Mitchell advanced to third with the score, 1-0, with two outs.
Kalissa Harris was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Sudan, but Mitchell was called out for leaving third base early to retire the side.
In the home-half of the first inning for Lockney, Siya Salazar ripped a triple to left field, and Jimenez followed it up with a sacrifice grounder to Danalei Kelley in the circle, who got the out at first, as Lockney tied the game, 1- 1. Mianette Rubio singled on an error by Lillianna Sanchez in center field and Hanna Salazar singled to left field, putting runners on first and second for the Lady Horns with one out.
Luna drew a walk, but Kelley would get Nelso to strike out looking and Jolene Guerrero was called out for batter interference to end the inning.
In the top of the second, Reyn Limon-Johnson and Kelley drew back- to- back walks to lead things off for the Nettes and Lupita Toscano was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Sudan. Sanchez and Haylee Toscano were also hit by pitches, bringing in two runs, stretching the lead to, 3-1. Williams walked in a run to make the score, 4-1, and Mitchell singled on a hard grounder to Emma Nelson at second base who got the force out at second for out number one, as Sudan pushed their lead to, 5-1.
Mitchell stole second on a passed ball and two pitches later, Haylee Toscano scored on an error by Jimenez at third base, extending their lead to, 6-1, as Mitchell advanced to third on the play. Mitchell would score on a passed ball to make the score, 7-1, before Ramirez drew a walk.
Harris and Limon- Johnson both walked to load the bases for Sudan, but Kelley struck out swinging for out number two. Lupita Toscano drew an RBIwalk to push their lead to, 8-1, heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Emma Nelson got the Lady Horns on base with a walk in the bottom half of the second and Victoria Salazar ripped an RBIsingle to center field to cut the lead to, 8-2. Siya Salazar singled to left field, but Jimenez was called out on the infield fly rule for out number two. Rubio reached on an error by Sanchez in center field to load the bases for Lockney and Hannah Salazar followed it up with a two-RBI single to center field, trimming the lead to, 8-4.
Luna, though, would ground out to Kelley in the circle for out number two and the Nettes would get an out at third on a dropped third strike to end the inning.
Sanchez got the third inning going for Sudan with a single to right field, before Haylee Toscano grounded out to Luna at shortstop for out number one. Williams drew a walk and Mitchell followed it up with a hard single to Luna at shortstop, allowing Sanchez to score on the play to make the score, 9- 4. Ramirez walked to load the bases and Karris walked in a run, making the score, 10-4.
Limon- Johnson struck out looking for out number two, but Kelley singled to center field to drive in two runs, stretching the lead to, 12-4. Lupita Toscano would ground out to Jimenz at third base to retire the side.
Sudan kept the Lady Horns quiet in the bottom half of the third, and in the top of the fourth, Sanchez and Haylee Toscano drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and they executed a double steal, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Sanchez stole home to make the score134. Haylee Toscano stole third and scored on an error by Jimenez at third base, as Williams advanced to third on the play with the score, 14- 4. Mitchell drew a walk and Ramirez followed it up with a two-RBI double to center field, stretching their lead to, 16-4.
Harris and Limon- Johnson drew back-to-back walks for the Nettes, but Kelley hit into a fielder ’s choice, as Noemi Rodriquez was out trying for third on the play, as Ramirez scored to make the score, 17-4. Emeri Rios drew a walk, but Sanchez struck out swinging and Rodriquez struck out swinging to retire the side.
Lockney scratched a run across in the bottom half of the fourth to make the score, 17-5, but in the top of the fifth inning, Sudan would load the bases, before Karris was called out on an infield fly to Luna at shortstop for out number one. Williams scored on a passed ball to make the score, 18-5, but Ramirez was called out for leaving the base early for out number two. Alissa Montes would score a few pitches later on a passed ball to make the score, 19-5, before Limon-Johnson struck out looking to retire the side.
Lockney added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but fell victim to the 10-run mercy rule, as Sudan took the contest, 19-7.
Kelley pitched five innings for the Nettes giving up seven hits, four walks and seven runs, three earned, while striking out eight batters.
