The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Slaton Tigerettes on Tuesday, 3923, to sweep the season series.
With the win, the Lady Cats are 17-7 overall, 7-3 in district play.
Slaton opened the game with a quick bucket, but Ari Castillo answered on the other end with a lay-up to tie the game, 2-2, with 5:14 remaining in the opening quarter. With just over four minutes to play in the first quarter, Kaitlyn Parker dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Nevaeh Esquibel. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 4-2.
Amoni Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Kolbi McCord; she sank one-of-two free throws to trim the lead to, 4-3, and on their next possession, Castillo was fouled on an attempt by Parker. She converted both free throws to give the Lady Cats the lead, 5-4, with 1:25 to play in the quarter.
McCord knocked down a jumper from the left side for Slaton, but with just under a minute to play in the quarter, Castillo was fouled on a put-back attempt by Parker, her second. She split the attempts to tie the game, 6-6. With time winding down in the first quarter, Cali Saldana was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She sank both shots from the line to put the Lady Cats in front, 8-6, as the first quarter came to a close.
Parker was fouled on an attempt by Madison Williams to open the second frame. She split the attempts at the line to make the score, 8-7. With 6:44 to play in the half, Brocoiya Harris was fouled on an attempt by Jefferson; she too split the free throws to tie the game, 8-8.
Nia Cleveland got the ball down low and dumped it off to Cali Saldana, who knocked down a floater on the baseline to put the Lady Cats back in front, 10-8. Cali Saldana followed it up with a steal on the defensive end, going coastto- coast, drawing a shooting foul on Kamry Barrera. She knocked down both shots at the line to push their lead to, 12-8.
With 4:20 remaining in the half, Castillo dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Cleveland, stretching their lead to, 14-8. Slaton took a time out with 4:18 left to play in the first half, and out of the break, the Lady Cats forced a five-second call on the inbound play to regain possession.
Castillo drew a shooting foul on Harris, her second, and sank both shots from the line to make it an eight-point game, 16-8. On the other end, Harris bounced a pass across the lane, as the Tigerettes dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Cleveland. They sank the free throw to cut the lead to, 16-11.
With 2:42 left in the half, Castillo picked up a steal in their own end and dropped in the lay-up, stretching their lead to, 18-11. With just over a minute remaining in the half, Cali Saldana dished the ball inside to Castillo, who dropped in a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Serenity McNabb. She converted the free throw pushing their lead to double-digits, 21-11.
McCord knocked down a three for Slaton from the left wing, but on the other end, Castillo answered with a put-back off of a miss by Cobi Saldana, drawing an and-one foul on McCord, her second. She sank the free throw to make the score, 24-14, going into the locker room at halftime.
Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Barrera to open the second half; she sank both shots at the line to make the score, 26-14. Harris would answer on the other end for Slaton, hitting McCord on the cut to the basket for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 26-16. With 5:32 remaining in the third quarter, Castillo was fouled on a thirdchance try by Barrera, her third. She converted both shots at the line and Cali Saldana followed it up with a three from the right elbow on their next possession to stretch the lead to, 31-16, as they took a time out with 4:19 to play in the third.
Out of the break, Esquibel was fouled on a put-back attempt by Barrera, her fourth. She converted both shots at the line and with 2:06 to play in the quarter, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Saibree Gonzales. She made oneof- two from the line to extend their lead to, 34-18. Harris dropped in a put-back for Slaton to close out the third quarter with Littlefield in front, 34-18.
Esquibel opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Cali Saldana, but two plays later, Harris dropped in a floater in the lane to trim the lead to, 36-16. Castillo answered with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Cali Saldana to push their lead to, 39-20.
The Lady Cat defense would hold the Tigerettes to three points in the final four minutes and fifty seconds to take the contest, 3923.
The Lady Cats were led by Castillo, who had a game-high 22 points. Cali Saldana chipped in nine points, while Jefferson and Esquibel each finished with four points in the contest.
The Lady Cats were at Shallowater on Friday to take on the Fillies. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Muleshoe.
