Fillies hold off late surge from Lady Dawgs in Anton, 45-34

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team topped the Anton Lady Dawgs on Saturday, 45-34, in Anton.

With the win, the Fillies improve to 2-1 overall on the season, while the Lady Dawgs fall to 2-1 overall on the year.

Alisiah Alafa got out on the fastbreak and dropped in a lay-up for Anton, drawing an and-one foul on Mariana Gallegos with 5:48 to play in the opening quarter. She converted the free throw to put Anton in front, 30, but Olton would answer, as Llama Ramirez dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Yarely Santillan, making the score, 3-2.

Alafa picked up a steal from Ramirez in their own end and dropped it in for a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 5-2, but on the next play, Kambri Ruiz buried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Kaleigh Geldenhuys to tie the game, 5-5, with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter. Ramirez dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Analise Ramage, but with 1:57 left to play in the quarter, Alyssa Mancias took a charge on Taryn Smith to regain possession for Anton.

With time winding down in the quarter, Alafa picked up a teal and got it ahead to Mancias for the fast-break lay-up, as she drew an and-one foul on Harlow Gorman. She converted the free throw to put Anton in front by one, 8-7, as the first quarter came to a close.

Ramage opened the second quarter with a defensive rebound, taking it coast-to-coast for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Mancias. She missed the free throw, but on their next possession Ruiz was fouled on an attempt by Sarah Carlisle, earning a trip to the line with 7:18 remaining in the first half. She made one-of-two shots from the line, putting Olton in front, 10-8.

Olton continued to build on their lead, as Ramage knocked down a three from the top of the key, before a time out was called with 6:03 to play in the half and the Fillies in front, 13-8. Out of the break, Santillan got the ball to Geldenhuys in transition for a lay-up and with 4:41 remaining in the half, Geldenhuys was fouled on an attempt by Aspyn Cooper, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots at the line to stretch the Olton lead to, 17-8.

Olton’s scoring run continued, as Ramage buried another three from the right elbow, making the score, 20-8, before they took a time out with 3:47 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Alyssa Rivera knocked down a jumper from the right side off of the assist from Ramage and Smith followed it up with a put-back off of her own miss, stretching the lead to, 24-8.

Mancias dropped in a lay-up in transition to stop the bleeding for Anton, but with under a minute to play in the half, Geldenhuys was fouled on a fastbreak attempt by Carlisle. It was called a flagrant foul, so the Fillies got two shots and the ball. Geldenhuys made one-of-two free throws and with time winding down in the half, Ramage was fouled on a put-back attempt byAddy Cooper. She sank both shots from the line to push their lead to, 27-10, going into the locker room at halftime.

Ramage took a charge on Miliana Castillo to open the second half and on the next play, Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Castillo, her fourth. She sank both shots at the line, extending the Olton lead to, 29-10, with 7:24 to play in the third quarter. Geldenhuys took a charge on Addy Cooper and the Fillies capitalized on the Anton turnover, as Geldenhuys dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Gallegos, making the score, 3110.

Olton took a time out with 5:20 to play in the third, and out of the break, Gallegos dropped in a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 33-10. Mancias knocked down a three from the right wing for Anton to end the scoring drought and with 3:05 to play in the third, Addy Cooper sent a long pass down court to Mancias, who dropped in the fast-break lay-up, cutting the lead to, 33-15.

Addy Cooper connected with Mancias again with a long pass for a fast-break lay-up and the Lady Dawgs followed it up with a fast-break lay-up by Alafa to cut the lead to, 33-19, with just over two minutes left to play in the quarter.

Olton took a time out with 2:04 to play in the third quarter, and out of the break,Addy Cooper dropped in a runner off the glass from the left side, trimming the lead to, 33-21. With under a minute remaining in the quarter, Ramage knocked down a jumper in the lane off of the assist from Smith, but in the closing seconds of the third quarter, Addy Cooper was fouled on an attempt by Gorman, her third. She made the first and missed the second, making the score, 35-22, going into the final quarter of play.

Anton opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up by Alafa off of a turnover by Gallegos, but Olton responded, as Geldenhuys dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Ramage, drawing an and-one foul on Carlisle, her third. She converted the and-one to stretch the Fillies’ lead back out to, 38-24.Anton took a time out with 6:54 to play in the game. Out of the break, Gallegos buried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Ramage to make the score, 41-24.

Mancias took a charge on Ruiz and the Lady Dawgs capitalized with a bucket, before Olton was called for stepping over the line on the inbound play, giving Anton the ball back with 5:50 to play in the game. Olton would regain possession, as Ramage was fouled on a third-chance try by Addy Cooper, her fourth. She sank both shots at the line to make the score, 4326.

Out of the break, Alafa was fouled on the floor by Geldenhuys, her fourth, sendingAlafa to the line for free throws. She made the first and missed the second, but Addy Cooper was able to track down the offensive rebound, before dropping in a lay-up to cut the lead to, 4332.

Aspyn Cooper was fouled on a defensive rebound by Ruiz and converted both free throw to make the score, 43-34, with 2:43 left to play. With just over a minute remaining, Geldenhuys drew a blocking foul on Aspyn Cooper, earning a trip to the line. She made the first shot, but missed the second, however Ramage grabbed the offensive rebound with the score, 44-34. Santillan would split a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to close out the game with Olton taking this one, 45-34.

The Fillies were led by Ramage, who tallied 11 points in the contest. Geldenhuys chipped in nine points, while Gallegos contributed seven points, and Smith tallied five points. Ruiz and Ramirez each contributed four points, while Santillan added three points and Rivera finished with two points.

The Lady Dawgs were led by Mancias, who netted 15 points and Alafa, who finished with 10 points. Addy Cooper chipped in five points and Aspyn Cooper finished with two points in the contest.

The Fillies were at Sundown on Tuesday to take on the Roughettes, while the Lady Dawgs were at Wilson. Results were not available at press time. The Fillies will continue their season on Friday with a home game against River Road, tipping off at 6:15, while the Lady Dawgs will be at home to take on Hart on Friday, also tipping off at 6:15 p.m.
