Hornets sting Indians, 36-24 for district victory

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team got back into the win column on Friday night with a home victory over the Morton Indians, 36-24.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-4 overall, 2-2 in district play.

Christian Enriquez scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter for the Indians on a 31yard touchdown run that was followed by the successful two- point conversion to Morton up, 8- 0, going into quarter number two.

In the second quarter, Cal Carter tossed the ball to Marcello King, who then pulled up to throw, finding a wide open Jaibryn Ornelas for a 60- yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was successful, tying the game, 88. King would score again on a six- yard touchdown run to put them in front, 14- 8, after the failed two- point conversion, as the game went to halftime.

Out of the break, King would find paydirt again, as he scored on an 11- yard run, followed with the two-point conversion, making the score, 22- 8, going into the final quarter of play.

Enriquez returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Indians and they scored on the two- point conversion to make it a six- point game, 22- 16, but Sudan would answer, as Carter connected with Aybran Granados for a 53-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good, stretching their lead to, 30-16.

The Indians would not lay down, as Brayden Villarreal connected with EJ Rivas for a 59- yard touchdown pass followed by the two- point conversion, cutting the lead to, 30-24. However, Sudan would ice the game with a 47- yard touchdown run by King, as they took the contest, 36- 24.

Offensively, Carter finished the game 8- 18 passing for 130 yards, one touchdown and one intereption while adding nine carries for 21 yards on the ground. King was 1- 1 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown.

King also led the rushing attack with 28 carries for 178 yards and three touchdowns, while Caleb Groetken tallied three carries for 20 yards and Angel Martinez notched three carries for 16 yards.

In the receiving game, Ornelas led the way with three catches for 86 yards and one touchdown, while Granados caught three passes for 84 yards and one touchdown, and Aspen Reyher hauled in one pass for 12 yards. Kincaid Boehning also caught two passes for eight yards.

Defensively, Kasen Kauffman led the team with 15 tackles, including two for loss, while Javier Avila tallied 13 tackles and a fumble. Granados and Zach Montes each tallies nine tackles, while Michael Williams finished with five tackles, two for loss and a blocked kick, and King tallied five tackles and an interception.

The Hornets will close out the regular season on Friday at Ralls.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
