Mustangs tame lions in, 42-0, shutout

The Olton Mustang’s varsity football team picked up a big district win on Friday over New Deal, shutting out the Lions, 42-0.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5- 3 overall, 2- 1 in district play.

The Mustangs totaled 496 yards of offense including 245 rushing yards and 186 passing yards, while holding New Deal to just 96 yards of offense.

Isaiah Ruiz got the Mustangs going in the opening quarter with a four- yard rushing touchdown, followed by Chris Cabrera’s PAT to put them in front, 7- 0, going into quarter number two.

In the second frame, Isaiah Ruiz found the endzone again, this time on a six-yard run. The PAT from Cabrera was good, pushing their lead to, 14- 0. Later in the quarter, Manny Carrasco gave the Mustangs a spark on special teams as he returned a punt 52- yards for a touchdown. The PAT by Cabrera put the Mustangs in front, 21- 0, going into the locker room at halftime.

Raymond Ramirez hit Carrasco for a 20- yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Cabrera drilled the PAT to stretch their lead to, 28- 0, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Isaiah Ruiz got loose for a 14- yard touchdown run and Brady Azam followed it up with a seven- yard touchdown run. Both PAT’s by Cabrera were good, as Olton throttled New Deal, 42-0.

Offensively, Ramirez finished the game 9- 16 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown, while adding five carries for 40 yards.

Isaiah Ruiz led the rushing attack with 27 carries for 152 yards and three touchdowns, while Nathaniel Ruiz tallied seven carries for 31 yards and Azam finished with two carries for 10 yards and one touchdown.

In the receiving game, Marrasco led the team with three catches for 92 yards and one touchdown, while Alan Vasquez tallied two catches for 32 yards and Zayden Falcon chipped in two catches for 27 yards. Jaxon Tomsu finished with one catch for 26 yards and Wyatt DeBerry had one catch for nine yards.

Defensively, Carrasco tallied two catches and an interception, while Avery Garcia led the team in tackles with 11, including one for loss and a sack. Emmitt Nelson, Vasquez and Jett Tomsu each tallied seven tackles, while Jaxon Tomsu finished with three tackles, including two for loss. Fabian Gutierrez tallied six tackles on the day, while Landon Lassiter finished with one tackle for a loss and a sack.

The Mustangs will host Abernathy on Friday for senior night.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
