Fillies sweep Abernathy in home district-opener, 3-0

The Olton Fillies’ varsity volleyball team won their home districtopener over the Abernathy Lady Lopes on Tuesday, 3-0; 25-13, 2522 and 25-14.

With the win, they Fillies improve to 13-13 overall, 1-1 in district play.

Gretchen Shipley sent a hit into the net to begein set for Abernathy, but Ellie Waldrip followed it up with a kill in front of Kaybree Ramon to tie the set, 1-1. Kaitlyn Avalos sent a hit out of bounds for the Fillies, but Waldrip’s next serve fell short of the net keeping the set tied, 2-2.

A serve from Denisse Alvarado went unreturned and Mollie Shipley sent a hit into the net for the Lady Lopes on the next play, stretching Olton’s lead to, 4-2. Alvarado sent a serve sailing out of bounds for the Fillies and Abernathy followed it up with a block by Gretchen Shipley for a kill to tie the set, 4-4.

Amiee Beelitz sent a kill sailing out of bounds for the Fillies, but a dig by Avalos fell in for a kill to cut the lead to, 4-6, as Olton regained the serve. Adrienne Struve delivered a kill in front of Emma Revilla and Analise Ramage dropped in a tip for a kill to knot the set up, 6-6. Bree Bailey sent a tip into the net for the Lady Lopes to give Olton the lead and a hit on the next play from Abernathy hit the foul pole, pushing the lead to, 8- 6, as Abernathy took a time out to talk things over.

Beelitz served up an ace off of Waldrip, but the Fillies were called for a double hit on the next play, trimming the lead to, 9- 7. Abernathy couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, as they were called for a double hit on the following play, making the score, 10-7. Olton would score back-to-back kills and Struve’s serve on the next play was returned out of bounds by the Lady Lopes, stretching the lead to, 13-7.

Abernathy delivered a kill to end the run, but the serve on the next play from Scotlann Bickel sailed out of bounds, pushing the lead to, 14-8. Taryn Smith served up an ace off of Revilla and Kambri Ruiz set Ramage up for a kill to stretch their lead to, 16-8. Smith followed it up with an ace off of Revilla, but on the next play, Alvarado’s kill attempt landed out of bounds on the sideline, trimming the lead to, 17-9.

Ramage sent a kill sailing out of bounds and the Fillies hit a ball short of the net on the next play, making the score, 17-11. The rally would come to an end when the Lady Lopes hit a ball out of bounds, turning the serve back over to the Fillies. Beelitz delivered a block for a kill, but Ramage’s next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 19-12.

Olton was called for being on the net on the next play, but Abernathy couldn’t capitalize, as they were whistled for a lift on the following play to make the score, 20-13. Ruiz would scored three consecutive aces before Gretchen Shipley sent a hit out of bounds, as the Fillies took set one, 25-13, going up 1-0 in the match.

Abernathy opened set two on an, 0-3, run before they sent a hit into the net, giving the serve to Olton. Ruiz tipped the net for an ace and Beelitz followed it up with a kill to tie the set, 3-3, before Gretchen Shipley sent a tip out of bounds to give Olton a one-point advantage. Ruiz couldn’t keep the rally going, as her next serve fell short of the net, tying the set, 4-4.

Olton would regain the serve after Bickel was called for being on the net and Alvarado followed it up with an ace to push their lead to, 6-4. Abernathy would score a kill to regain the serve, and Smith sent a hit into the net for Olton on the next play, making the score, 66. The Lady Lopes were called for a double-hit giving the serve back to Olton, but it was short-lived, as Bailey delivered a kill off of the block attempt from Ramage and Smith, making the score, 7-7.

Abernathy took a two-point lead after back-to-back miscues by Olton, but a tip from Ramage was hit hit out of bounds by Abernathy to make the score, 8-9. Smith sent a kill attempt sailing out of bounds and Struve dropped a tip out of bounds for the Fillies, pushing the Lady Lopes lead to, 8-11.

The Fillies, though, would rally and three plays later would tie the set after a tip from Ramage tipped the net for a kill. Smith would follow it up with an ace off of Revilla to give them the lead to, 12-11. The teams went back and forth until a kill from Gretchen Shipley sailed out of bounds, making the score, 15-14.

A hit from Mollie Shipley hit the foul pole for Abernathy, but a dig by Ramon ended up falling in for a kill to cut the lead to, 16-15. Struve delivered a kill off of Waldrip and Beelitz followed it up with a block for a kill to push their lead to, 1815. Abernathy would no go away, as they would battle back to make it a one-point game, 18-17, after a kill from Beelitz landed out of bounds.

Struve would respond with a kill in the back corner for Olton, but the next serve from Beelitz sailed out of bounds, making the score, 19-18. Smith delivered a kill at the net for Olton, as Abernathy took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, the teams exchanged points and a hit from Ramage was hit out of bounds by the Lady Lopes, making the score, 22-19.

Mollie Shipley dropped a tip over Ramage for a kill, but the Lady Lopes sent a hit into the net on the next play, making the score, 23-20. Lily Adams sent a hit short of the net, but the Lady Lopes would answer with back-to-back points to cut the lead to, 24-22. Alvarado would tip the net with a hit for a kill to close out the set, 25-22, as Olton went up 2-0 in the match.

Alvarado opened set three with a kill off of Gretchen Shipley’s block attempt and Waldrip sent a hit into the net on the next play making the score, 2-0. Ramonn sent a tip out of bounds, but the Fillies would recover, as Beelitz returned the serve from Waldrip for a kill, making the score, 3-1. Alvarado kept the rally going with an ace, before the Fillies were called for being on the net during a block attempt, trimming the lead to, 4-2.

Beelitz sent a hit out of bounds, but the Lady Lopes would give the serve right back, as they were called for a double-hit making the score, 5-3. A tip from Bailey landed out of bounds for Abernathy an each team sent a serve out of bounds, before Smith tipped the net for a kill to push their lead to, 8-4. Struve followed it up with an ace off of Waldrip before Bailey sent a hit into the net, making the score, 10-4, as Abernathy took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Olton would rally for three more points, before Struve sent a serve sailing out of bounds to make the score, 13-5. Bickel served up an ace on the sideline, before sending her next serve short of the net to make the score, 14-6. The Lady Lopes were called for being on the net on the next play, but Olton couldn’t capitalize, as Smith’s next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 15-7.

A series of miscues by both teams was followed with an ace from Adames, but they couldn’t rally, as Waldrip sent a tip into the net for a kill, making the score, 1710. Ruiz sent a serve short of the net, but again Abernathy couldn’t capitalize, as Bickel sent a hit into the net, making the score, 18-11.

Ciara Zermeno served up three consecutive aces, before Gretchen Shipley sent a kill out of bounds, making the score, 22-11. Zermeno’s next serve went unreturned by Abernathy, before she sent a serve short of the net, making the score, 23-12. Gretchen Shipley delivered a kill off of a long dig by Smith, but Beelitz delivered a kill off of Bickel and Bailey sent a kill attempt sailing out of bounds for Abernathy, giving Olton the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

The Fillies were at Tahoka on Saturday to take on the Lady Dogs. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a home game against Plains.

First set is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
