Mustangs shutout bobcats in Dimmitt, 55-0

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team went on the road to Dimmitt on Friday, posting a shutout, as they throttled the Bobcats, 55-0.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 2-0 overall on the season.

The Mustangs totaled 338 yards of offense on Friday, including 116 yards passing, and 222 yards rushing, while holding the Bobcats to 106 total yards of offense.

Sophomore, Jett Tomsu, opened the game with a one-yard rushing touchdown. Chris Cabrera followed it up with the PAT to put the Mustangs in front, 7-0. Later in the quarter, sophomore, Emmitt Nelson returned a fumble for a touchdown, followed by the PAT from Cabrera to stretch their lead to, 14-0.

In the second frame, senior, Jaxon Tomsu, caught a 17-yard pass from senior quarterback, Raymond Ramirez, making the score, 21-0, after the PAT. Junior running back, Isaiah Ruiz, would tack on one more score before the half, rushing for a five-yard touchdown to make the score, 28-0, going into the locker room at halftime.

Out of the break, Sophomore, Manny Carrasco, caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez and the PAT from Cabrera was good, pushing their lead to, 35-0, to start the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback, Brady Azam, rushed for a three-yard touchdown and senior, Alan Vasquez, would close out the quarter with a scoop and score, making the score, 48-0, going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, senior running back, Nathaniel Ruiz, rushed for a four-yard touchdown and the PAT was good, as they went on to take the contest, 55-0.

Offensively, Ramirez finished the game 10-15 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns, while adding five carries for 43 yards on the ground.

Isaiah Ruiz led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 90 yards and a score, while Azam tallied three carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. Nathaniel Ruiz added five carries for 12 yards and one touchdown and Jett Tomsu tallied two carries for nine yards and a score.

In the receiving game, Jaxon Tomsu led the way with five catches for 39 yards and one touchdown, while Carrasco finished with three catches for 38 yards and one touchdown. Avery Garcia chipped in one catch for 21 yards and Vasquez finished with two catches for 18 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs recovered four fumbles, two were returned for touchdowns and they brought down two interceptions. They were led by Emmitt Nelson, who finished with seven total tackles, two for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Jett Tomsu tallied six tackles, while Garcia, Isrrael Velez, Wyatt DeBerry and Carrasco each finished with four tackles. DeBerry also had an interception.

Isaiah Ruiz added three tackles and a fumble recovery, while Vasquez tallied two tackles, one for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Ramirez also recorded an interception.

The Mustangs will host The Texico Wolverines at Mustang Stadium on Friday for their homecoming game.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
