Wildcats throttle Lamesa in opener, 55-27

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team got their season started last Friday with a victory over Lamesa, 55-27, in their home-opener.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-0 overall on the season.

The Wildcats totaled 546 yards of offense, including 234 passing yards and 312 rushing yards.

Lamesa opened the first quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass, but the Wildcats would answer, as senior running back, Major McNeese, rushed for a 23-yard touchdown. The PAT by Adam MacDonald was good, making the score, 7-7.

Senior running back, Ian Mendez, would rush for back-toback touchdowns, one from oneyard out, the other from 36-yards out. Both PAT’s were good from MacDonald, stretching their lead to 21-7. Senior quarterback, Chip Green, would close out the first quarter with a six-yard touchdown run, making the score, 27-7, as the opening quarter came to a close.

In the second frame, Green rushed for a six-yard touchdown and then he connected with senior, Gabriel Villanueva, for a 76yard touchdown strike, both followed by PAT’s from MacDonald, pushing their lead to, 41-7, going into the locker room at halftime.

The Wildcats opened up the third quarter with another touchdown strike from Green, as he connected with senior, Eizeah Coleman for 36-yards. The PAT from MacDonald was good, making the score, 48-7. Lamesa would strike back with back-to-back touchdowns through the air, trimming the lead to, 48-21, going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Green rushed for a three-yard touchdown to extend their lead to, 5521, following the PAT. But, later in the quarter, the Wildcats would try a long field goal, but the try was missed and caught by Lamesa in the endzone, as the Golden Tornadoes returned it all the way back for a touchdown, as Littlefield went on defeat the Golden Tornadoes, 55-27.

Green led the offensive attack going 15-25 passing for 234 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also tallied 18 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns.

In the rushing game, Mendez contributed 12 carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns, while McNeese added 11 carries for 56 yards and a score. Jose Payan also tallied eight carries for 25 yards.

Receiving, Coleman hauled in eight catches for 84 yards and a score, while Villanueva contributed two catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Bradyn Redman hauled in one catch for 48 yards, while Jayden Barrio tallied one catch for 13 yards.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Ben Castillo, who tallied 11 total tackles, including eight solo tackles and two for loss, while Caden Reyes chipped in nine tackles, six solo, and Redman contributed seven tackles, five solo, a sack and an interception. Zane Champion also had six solo tackles and Sawson Adkins forced and recovered a fumble.
