Hornets run rule Longhorns, 15-5, in district-opener

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team got district play started on the right foot on Tuesday with a, 15-5, road win over the Lockney Longhorns.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 7-4 overall, 1-0 in district play.

It was a tight game early-on, as Sudan drove in two runs in the top of the first inning, but Lockney answered with a run in the bottom half to make the score, 2- 1, going into the second inning. Both teams were blanked in the second frame, but in the top of the third inning, Sudan scratched three runs across to take a, 5-1, lead.

Lockney would again answer with two runs in the bottom of the third, trimming the lead to, 5- 3. The Hornets would outscore the Longhorns, 1- 0, in the fourth inning to extend their lead to, 6- 3, and both teams pushed two runs across in the fifth inning, making the score, 8-5, going into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, Sudan exploded for seven runs, while keeping Lockney quiet in the home-half of the inning to take the, 15- 5, run rule victory on the road.

Freshman, Cal Carter, pitched a complete game for the Hornets, throwing six innings on the mound, giving up seven hits, one walk and five runs, four earned, while earning 14 strikeouts.

As a team, the Hornets tallied 10 hits, led by sophomore, Caleb Groetken, who finished with four RBI’s, three hits and one walk. Carter added three RBI’s, three hits including a double and two walks, while senior, Trent Wilson, tallied three RBI’s, one hit for a double and two walks. Kooper Edwards finished with one RBI and three walks.

The Hornets were at home on Saturday for their second meeting with the Longhorns. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a road game against the New Deal Lions.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
