Wildcats blast Levelland, 72-34

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team resumed play after the Christmas break on Tuesday, cruising to a home victory over the Levelland Lobos, 72-34, at Wildcat Gym.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 17-3 overall, 0-1 in district play.

Eryk Jones dropped in a lay-up to get the Lobos on the board in the first quarter, but Ryan Williams answered with a floater from the left side and on their next possession, Chip Green passed the ball to Jeremiah Trevino, who split a double-team, getting to the basket for a lay-up, putting the Wildcats in front, 4-2, with 6:08 to play in the opening quarter.

With 5:44 to play in the quarter, MJ Randle picked up a steal and got it to Green, who buried a three from the top of the key to stretch their lead to, 7-2, as the Lobos took a time out with 5:38 left to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Trevino picked up a steal in their own end and got it to Green for a quick lay-up, extending their lead to, 9-2.

Green followed it up with a steal in their own end for a lay-up, but Levelland answered, as Ozzie Solano scored on a fast-break layup, before the Lobos took a 30second time out with 3:16 to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Omar Martinez hit Trevino with the outlet pass for a fast-break lay-up, however Jayden Castillo answered for the Lobos with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Jones, making the score, 13-7, with 1:13 left to play in the quarter.

Sean Landrum dropped in a layup in transition, as the Wildcats took a time out with their lead cut to, 13-9, with 32.4 seconds to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Ryan Williams was fouled on a putback attempt by Elijah Jordan. He converted both free throws to make the score, 15-9, as the first quarter came to a close.

Martinez opened the second frame with a floater in the lane off of an assist from Green and Jayden Barrio followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Trevino, pushing their lead to, 19-9. Barrio kept the rally going with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Trevino, but Jones stopped the bleeding for Levelland with a floater, trimming the lead to, 22-11, with 6:11 to play in the first half.

Trevino spun to the basket for a lay-up off of the assist from Green and on their next possession, Ja’Den Williams was fouled on a put-back attempt by Jordan. He made one-of-two shots from the line, pushing their lead to, 2511. Landrum knocked down a jumper from the right elbow for the Lobos and Castillo followed it up with a put-back to cut the Littlefield lead to, 25-15, but Martinez silenced the Lobo crowd with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams and Green followed it up with a pass to Trevino in transition for a layup, making the score, 30-15, with just over three minutes to play in the half.

Martinez dropped in a fastbreak lay-up off of a steal, as Levelland took a full time out with 2:24 to play in the half, trailing, 3215. Out of the break, Ryan Williams dropped in a runner from the right baseline and Randle followed it up with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Sir Pratt, pushing their lead to, 37-15.

With time winding down in the half, Ryan Williams poked the ball away from the Levelland guard and Martinez picked it up and dropped in a floater in the lane to close out the first half with the Wildcats in control, 39-15.

Ryan Williams dropped in a floater in the lane to open the second half, but Jones answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Jefferey Cisneros, making the score, 41-17. Cisneros dropped in a lay-up in transition off of a Littlefield turnover, but the Wildcats answered, as Ryan Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in the put-back off of a miss by Randle, pushing their lead to, 43-19, with 6:26 to play in the third quarter.

Martinez took a charge on Jones and after the play, Levelland’s Head Coach was called for a technical foul, sending Green to the line for free throws. He converted both shots from the line to make the score, 45-19, with 5:40 to play in the quarter.

Trevino dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Ryan Williams, but Anthony Gonzalez answered as he used a pump fake to get to the freethrow line for a jumper, trimming the lead to, 47-21. With four minutes to go in the third, Ryan Williams was fouled on an attempt by Solano. He made one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 4821.

Gonzalez dropped in a lay-up in transition, but Ryan Williams answered with a lay-up off of a steal and assist from Trevino and Martinez followed it up with a layup in transition, extending their lead to, 52-23, with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. Green drove the lane, kicking the ball out to Martinez, who buried the three from the left wing and Randle hit Martinez with an outlet pass for a fast-break lay-up on the next play to close out the quarter with Littlefield in front, 57-23.

Ja’Den Williams drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Barrio to open the fourth quarter, but Jones answered with a runner off the glass, making the score, 60-25, with 7:24 left to play. Trevino knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Ryan Williams, but on the other end, Jones was fouled on an attempt by Barrio; he made oneof- two shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 62-26.

Jones and Landrum dropped in back-to-back buckets for the Lobos, but Barrio responded with a jumper from the left wing, making the score, 64-31, with 4:42 left to play in the game. Jones was fouled on a put-back attempt by Pratt. He made one-of-two shots from the line, but Randle responded, driving to the lane and dumping the ball off to Pratt for a lay-up, making the score, 66-32.

Ja’Den Williams knocked down a jumper from the right wing and he followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Barrio, making the score, 70-32. Pratt hit Ja’Den Williams with an outlet pass for a lay-up, but Jones responded, driving the middle of the lane and finishing with a one-hand slam, as the Wildcats finished off the Lobos, 72-34.

The Wildcats had four players finish in double-figures scoring led by Martinez, who tallied 16 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Ryan Williams contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, two asssits and one steal. Trevino chipped in 12 points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds, while Ja’Den Williams tallied 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one block. Green chipped in nine points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals, while Barrio contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Randle added three points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Pratt finished with two points, three rebounds and one assist.

The Wildcats hosted Lamesa on Friday to resume district play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Friona.
