The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team came up short in their tournament-opener at the Wildcat Classic on Wednesday against Levelland, as they fell to the Loboettes, 69-20.
With the loss, the Fillies fall to 0-1 in tournament play.
Levelland opened the contest on a, 13-0, scoring run, before Aspen Struve drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Evelyn Matute, trimming the lead to, 13-3, with 4:39 remaining in the opening quarter. Leilani Sanchez answered with a three from the right elbow and Presley Smith followed it up with a lay-up in transition to make the score, 18-3, with 3:46 to play in the first quarter.
Olton took a 30 second time out with 3:42 to play in the quarter and with time winding down in the quarter Smith dropped in a lay-up off of a steal from Yarely Santillan to close out the first quarter with the Loboettes in front, 20-5.
Carly Tienda opened the second quarter with a jumper in the lande for Levelland, but Olton answered as, Kaileigh Geldenhuys scored a lay-up off of a steal to trim the lead to, 22-7, with 4:55 remaining in the first half. Olton took a time out with 4:04 to play in the half, and out of the break, Smith hit Sanchez for a three from the right wing, stretching the lead to, 25-7.
Levelland would close out the first half on a, 9-0, scoring run, taking a, 34-8, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Olivia Velardez drained a three from the left elbow to open the second half, sparking a 12-0 scoring run to open the third quarter for Levelland. Geldenhuys knocked down a three from the left elbow to get the Fillies on the board in the second half, still trailing, 46-11, with 4:22 to play in the third quarter. Smith dropped in a lay- up through contact and Velardez followed it up with a three from the right elbow to stretch their lead to, 51-11, with just over three minutes remaining in the third.
Mia Morin knocked down a jumper in the lane, but Emma Acker answered with a drive to the basket for a floater, trimming the lead to, 53-13. With under a minute to go in the quarter, Maddie Stafford knocked down a floater in the lane, but Struve answered with a three from the left elbow, making the score, 55-16, going into the final quarter of play.
Analise Ramage dropped in a lay-up to open the fourth quarter, but with 5:30 remaining, Morin dropped in a lay-up and Smith followed it up with a three from the top of the key to stretch their lead to, 60-18. Morin scored a fastbreak lay-up off of a turnover and Kaydence Escarcega followed it up with a three from the right elbow, pushing the lead to, 65-18.
With just over two minutes remaining, Amie Beelitz was fouled on the floor by Struve; she sank both free throws, trimming the lead to, 65-20. However Kaylee Penner and Morin would score back-toback lay-ups to close out the game, as Olton fell to Levelland, 69-20.
The Fillies were led in scoring by Struve and Geldenhuys, who each tallied six points. Chavira, Santillan, Ramage and Beelitz each finished with two points in the contest.
The Fillies played Sundown Thursday afternoon in the consolation bracket. Results were not available at press time.
