Wildcats take down Floydada, 73-48

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team won their second game of pool play on Thursday at the 2023 Roosevelt Tournament, as they took down Floydada, 73-48.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to, 2-0 in tournament play, 60 overall on the season.

The Wildcats took a charge on Tyrean Henderson to open the contest, and MJ Randle followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Omar Martinez to put them in front, 3-0. Aiden Trevino got the Whirlwinds on the board with a lay-up, but on the other end, Ryan Williams dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Jeremiah Trevino, drawing an and-one foul on Sergio Valadez. He missed on the free throw, leaving the score, 5-2, with 5:53 to play in the opening quarter.

Green dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Trevino and Trevino followed it up with a lay-up in transition to stretch the lead to, 9-2, with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter. Ryan Williams hit Green with a no-look pass for a lay-up, but Hagen Hinsley answered with a layup for Floydada, trimming the lead to, 11-4, with 4:22 to play in the quarter.

Green responded with a three from the right wing, but Henderson fired right back with a three from the left elbow for Floydada, making the score, 14-7. With 3:28 to play in the quarter, Martinez picked up a steal and got it ahead to Randle for the fastbreak lay-up, stretching the lead back out to, 16-7. Trevino followed it up with a pass to Martinez, who gave it right back to Trevino for the lay-up in transition, pushing their lead to, 18-7.

Ryan Williams kept the run going with a lay-up, as Floydada took a time out with 2:49 to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Braun Hobbs was fouled on an attempt by Martinez; he made one-of-two shots from the line and followed it up with a lay-up to cut the lead to, 20-10, with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter.

Ryan Williams dished a dime to Trevino for a lay-up, but on the other end, Aiden Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Ryan Williams, earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws, making the score, 22-11, with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. Ryan Williams answered with a step-back three from the left elbow off of the assist from Kam McCarty and Jayden Barrio followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams, pushing their lead to, 28-11.

Ja’Den Williams took a charge on Hobbs to close out the first quarter with Littlefield in control, 28-11.

McCarty dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Pratt to open the second frame, but Henderson answered with a jumper to trim the lead to, 30-13. With 6:48 to play in the second quarter, Valadez was fouled on an attempt by Pratt earning a trip to the line. He made one-of-two shots from the line to trim the lead to, 30-14, but on the other end, McCarty was fouled on an attempt by Henderson, sending him to the line for a pair of free throws. McCarty sank both attempts from the line to push the lead to, 32-14.

With 4:33 remaining in the half, Ja’Den Williams dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Barrio but Floydada answered with a floater by Valadez and back-to-back lay-ups by Hobbs, slicing the lead to, 34-20, with 2:33 to play in the half. McCarty grabbed an offensive rebound after the miss by Green and dropped in a floater to end the scoring run for Floydada, making the score, 36-20.

Ryan Williams dropped in a floater in the lane, but on the other end, Aiden Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Jeremiah Trevino, earning a trip to the line. He converted both shots at the line and Hobbs closed out the first half with a put-back, making the score, 38-24, going into the locker room at halftime.

Aiden Trevino and Hobbs opened the second half with back-to-back layups for Floydada, but Randle silenced them with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Green, pushing the lead back out to, 41-28. With 5:48 to play in the third, Valadez dropped in a floater for the Whirlwinds, drawing an and-one foul on Ryan Williams. He converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 41-31.

Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a floater from the left side and Martinez followed it up with a floater in the lane off of an assist from Randle, making the score, 45-31. Green picked up a steal from Henderson and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, stretching the lead back out to, 47-31. With 3:46 to play in the third, Ryan Williams picked up a steal and got it ahead to Randle, who dished it to Martinez for the transition bucket, extending the lead to, 49-31.

Hobbs scored a lay-up to stop the run for Littlefield, but Green went right back on the attack with a lay-up in transition and he followed it up with an easy lay-up off of the turnover by Henderson, stretching the lead to, 5333, as Floydada took a time out with 3:04 to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Henderson was fouled on an attempt by Jeremiah Trevino. He converted both free throws and Hobbs followed it up on their next possession with a put-back off of the miss by Aiden Trevino, trimming the lead to, 53-37.

Ja’Den Williams dropped in a layup for the Wildcats, but Hobbs answered with a lay-up on the other end, making the score, 55-39, with 1:40 to play in the third quarter. Ryan Williams dropped in a floater in the lane, but Aiden Trevino drained a three from the left elbow and the Whirlwinds took a charge on Barrio to regain possession with 45.5 seconds to play in the quarter. The Wildcats would close out the quarter with a lay-up, making the score, 59-42, going into the final quarter of play.

Pratt faked a shot passing it across the lane to Ja’Den Williams for a layup to open the fourth quarter, but Henderson quickly answered with a lay-up, making the score, 61-44. Littlefield would fire right back, as Ryan Williams sank a floater from the left side and Barrio followed it up with a put-back off of the miss from Ja’Den Williams, making the score, 65-44.

With 5:26 to play in the game, McCarty bounced a pass to Barrio, who was fouled on the shot attempt by Floydada. He converted both free throws, pushing their lead to, 67-44. Green picked up a steal and got it ahead to Martinez in transition for a lay-up and Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Martinez, stretching the lead to, 7144.

With 2:15 remaining, Martinez scored a put-back off of a missed dunk by Ja’Den Williams, pushing the lead to, 73-44, Noel Corona scored backto- back buckets to close out the game, as Littlefield took the contest, 73-48.

The Wildcats were led by Ryan Williams, who tallied 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. He was joined in double-figures scoring by Green who tallied 13 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, and Trevino, who finished with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and one block.

Martinez tallied eight points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Randle chipped in eight points, two assists and one steal, and McCarty contributed eight points, six rebounds, one steal and one block. Barrio added seven points, five rebounds and two assists, while Ja’Den Williams tallied six points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist and Pratt finished with three rebounds and one assist.
