Nettes drop back-to-back contests at Abernathy Tourney

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team dropped back-to-back games to close out the Abernathy Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

With the losses, the Nettes fall to 4-3 overall on the year.

On Friday, the Nettes battled with the Nazareth Swiftettes, falling in the second round of Tournament play, 55-33. Nazareth took en early, 18-8, lead through the first quarter, but both teams tallied seven points in the second frame to make the score, 25-15, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, Nazareth outscored the Nettes, 10-4, to take a, 35-19, lead into the locker room at halftime. Sudan posted 14 points in the final frame, but fell to the Swiftettes, 55-33.

Kaileigh Greenwalt led the Nettes in scoring with seven points, to go along with one rebound and one steal, while Addison Cornelius chipped in six points, six rebounds and one steal, and Blessy Montes tallied five points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists.

Melo Rodriguez contributed four points and seven rebounds, while Edette Herrera tallied four points, three steals and two rebounds, and Haylee Toscano added three points, two steals, one assist and one block. Erica Herrera chipped in two points, while Emry Humphreys added two points and one rebound and Lexi Jennings finished with two points, two assists and one steal.

In their game on Saturday against Abernathy, the Nettes fell to the Lady Lopes, 77-51.

It was a close game early one with Abernathy scoring 21 points out of the gates to take an early lead, 21-14. Sudan netted 18 points in the second frame, but Abernathy took a, 46-32, lead into the locker room at halftime. Both teams netted 10 points in the third quarter to open the second half, as Abernathy led, 56-42, going into the final quarter of play.

In the final frame, Abernathy outscored the Nettes, 21-9, to take the contest, 77-51.

Montes led the Nettes in scoring with 12 points and five rebounds, while Rodriguez chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal, and Cornelius tallied eight points, six steals and three rebounds.

Greenwalt contributed eight points, three rebounds and one assist, while Toscano tallied eight points, five steals, four rebounds, one assist and one block, and Humphreys chipped in three points and four rebounds.

Edette Herrera contributed two points, two rebounds, two steals and one block, while Jennings added one points, four rebounds, one block and one assist and Erica Herrera finished with three rebounds and two steals.

The Nettes will resume play on Tuesday, Nov. 28th when they take on Boden County at Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
