Wildcats cruise past Eagles, 74- 19
The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team picked up their first win of the season and the first varsity win for Head Coach Nathan McKinnon, as they toppled the Roosevelt Eagles, 74-19.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-0 overall on the season.
A block on the defensive end from Ryan Williams led to a fastbreak lay-up for Chip Green, as the Wildcats got the game going. Littlefield took a time out with 6:23 to play in the opening quarter and out of the break, MJ Randle picked up a steal and pushed it ahead to Green for another fast- break lay- up to make the score, 4-0.
Omar Martinez followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal and Green kept the offensive barrage going with a three from the right wing off of the asisst from Ryan Williams, making the score, 9-0. Ethan Cervantes got the Eagles going with a pull-up three from the top of the key, but Green answered on the other end with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Randle, making the score, 12-3, with just over four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Martinez scored a lay-up off of a steal, prompting Roosevelt to take a time out with 3:47 to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Green dished the outlet pass down court to Martinez for a quick lay-up, stretching their lead to, 16-3. With 3:21 to play in the quarter, Caleb Aguilar was fouled on a put-back attempt by Green and made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 16-4.
Randle took a charge on Cole Hatchett with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Eagles would regain possession, as Kobe Mireles dropped in a fast-break lay-up, cutting the lead to, 16-6. Ja’Den Williams was fouled on an attempt by Aguilar and sank both shots at the line to push the lead to, 186, but Roosevelt would answer, as Hunter Garrison dropped in a lay-up off of a save attempt under the Eagles basket by Ryan Williams, trimming the lead to, 18-8.
With just over a minute to play in the quarter, Kam McCarty drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Ryan Williams, but with time winding down in the quarter, Cervantes dropped in a floater in the lane, making the score, 21-10, as the first quarter came to a close.
Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Green, drawing an and-one foul on Adrian Edwards. He missed on the free throw, leaving the score, 23-10, with 6:26 to play in the first half. On their next possession, Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Aguilar. He converted both shots at the line, stretching their lead to, 25-10.
With 5:32 to play in the half, pressure defense by Ryan Williams and Trevino led to a steal that results in a fast-break layup for Ryan Williams off of the assist from Trevino, extending the lead to, 27-10. Randle took a charge on Garrison and on the next play, Green hit Martinez on the two-on-one fast-break for a lay-up to make the score, 29-10. Martinez would get out for another fast-break lay-up, forcing the Eagles to take a time out with four minutes remaining in the half, trailing the Wildcats, 31-10.
Out of the break, an offensive rebound by Ryan Williams led to a lay-up for Martinez, making the score, 33-10, with 3:14 remaining in the half. Martinez followed it up with a fast-break layup off of the outlet pass from Green, stretching their lead to, 35-10. With just over a minute to play in the half, Ryan Williams dropped in a fast-break lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Gabino Pacheco. He converted the free throw to push the lead out to, 38-10.
McCarty dropped in a putback off of his own miss and followed it up with a fast-break layup to close out the first half with Littlefield in front, 42-10.
Green opened the third quarter with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Trevino and he followed it up with an outlet pass to Martinez for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 47-10, to open the second half. With 6:06 to play in the third, Trevino passed to Green, who passed it across the lane to Ryan Williams for a lay-up, as the Wildcats’ offensive clinic continued. With 5:47 to play in the quarter, Williams hit Martinez for a lay-up and Randle followed it up with another layup on their next possession, pushing the lead to, 53-10.
The Eagles took a time out with 5:16 to play in the third, and out of the break, Ryan Williams tossed an outlet pass down court to Green, who finished the play with a lay-up, extending their lead to, 55-10. Martinez would burry a three from the right wing to close out the third quarter with the Wildcats in front, 58-10.
Martinez grabbed an offensive rebound and dished it to Ryan Williams, who drained a three from the left wing to open the fourth quarter. Williams would follow it up with a three from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 64-10, with 5:32 left to play in the game. Martinez dropped in a put-back off of his own miss, but Mireles answered for the Eagles with at three from the right wing to trim the lead to, 66-13.
A steal by Jayden Barrio led to a lay-up for Sir Pratt, as he drew an and-one foul on Aguilar. He missed the free throw, but Ja’Den Williams was there for the put-back extending the lead to, 70-13. With just under three minutes to play, Pratt dropped in a put-back off of a miss by McCarty, but Roosevelt answered, as Hatchett bounced a pass across the lane to Aguilar for a lay-up, making the score, 72-15.
McCarty dished a pass inside to Ja’Den Williams, who passed it to Pratt for a lay- up, but Edwards and Aguilar scored back-to-back lay-ups to close out the contest, as Littlefield took the victory, 74-19.
Martinez led the Wildcats with 23 points, to go along with seven rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist, while Ryan Williams tallied 13 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks, and Green added 12 points, seven asssits, five steals and three rebounds.
McCarty contributed seven points, four rebounds, two steals and one block, while Pratt tallied six points, four rebounds and one block, and Ja’Den Williams added four points, three rebounds and one assist.
Trevino tallied four points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Randle added two points, six steals, four assists and three rebounds and Barrio finished with five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The Wildcats hosted Tahoka on Friday in non-district play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Monday when they travel to Post to take on the Antelopes.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
