The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team fell to the Floydada Whirlwinds on the road on Friday night, 31-25, as the regular season came to a close.
With the loss, the Mustangs finish the season 7- 3 overall, 3- 2 in district play.
The Mustangs totaled 289 yards of offense, including 118 passing yards and 171 rushing yards.
Nathan Urbina recovered a fumble in the endzone to open the first quarter scoring for Olton and it was followed up with the PAT by Chris Cabrera, making the score, 7-0. Later in the quarter, Urbina caught a 25- yard pass from Alan Vasquez for a touchdown, but the PAT by Cabrera was no good, leaving the score, 13- 0.
Floydada would respond with a 74- yard touchdown pass, followed by the PAT to cut the lead to, 13- 7, going into the second frame.
The Whirlwinds kicked a 26yard field goal to open the second quarter, and later in the quarter, Raymond Ramirez was picked off, as Floydada took it the other way for the pick- six, followed by the PAT, to put them in front, 17-13, going into the locker room at halftime.
The Whirlwinds opened the third quarter with a 13- yard rushing touchdown followed by the PAT, but Olton answered later in the quarter, as Baldo Garcia rushed for a twoyard touchdown to cut the lead to, 24- 13, after the failed twopoint conversion.
In the fourth quarter, Garcia rushed for a one- yard touchdown, but the Mustangs again missed on the two- point conversion to put the Mustangs back in front, 25-24. However, later in the quarter, Floydada would score the go- ahead touchdown on an eight- yard run and they drilled the PAT to take the contest, 31- 25.
Raymond Ramirez finished the game seven- of- 19 passing for 80 yards and two interceptions, while Vasquez was twoof- three passing for 38 yards and a touchdown. Vasquez also added three carries for seven yards.
Ruiz led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 128 yards, while Garcia tallied 13 carries for 40 yards and two touchdowns.
Jimmy Munoz led the receiving attack with four catches for 54 yards, while Urbina tallied one catch for 25 yards and a touchdown. Vasquez had one catch for 15 yards, while Eddie Medrano chipped in one catch for 13 yards and Jacob Escobar tallied two catches for 11 yards.
Defensively, Jacob Marquez led the team in tackles with 12 total tackles, including two for loss, one sack and a forced fumble. Fabian Gutierrez tallied eight tackles, two for loss, while Jaxon Tomsu chipped in six tackles, and Urbina had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
The Mustangs will battle with Farwell on Friday in Littlefield in the Class 2A Bidistrict round of the play- offs.
Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
