Hornets clinch share of district title with win over RAlls

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team defeated the Ralls Jackrabbits on Friday, 27-22, to claim a share of the District 3-2A Championship with Lockney.

With the win, the Hornets finish the season 7-3 overall, 4-1 in district play.

Sudan totaled 300 yards of total offense, including 173 passing yards and 127 rushing yards.

Sudan opened the scoring in the first quarter, as Caleb Groetken caught a six-yard pass from Trent Wilson. Wilson followed it up with the PAT to put the Hornets in front, 7-0. But, Ralls would answer with a 22-yard touchdown pass followed by the two-point conversion to put the Jackrabbits in front, 8-7. Ralls would score again on a three-yard touchdown run and they converted the two-point conversion to stretch their lead to, 167. Sudan, though, would close the gap before the end of the quarter, as Marcello King took an interception 40-yards the other way for a pick-six. The two-point conversion try was no good, leaving the score, 16-13, going into the second quarter.

Neither team was able to find the end zone in the second frame, and in the third quarter, Alan Flores caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Wilson and Sal Juarez followed it up with the two-point conversion run to put the Hornets back on top, 21-16. King would score later in the quarter on a seven-yard touchdown run, but they missed the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 27-16, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Ralls would narrow the gap on the scoreboard with a 12-yard touchdown pass, but they missed on the two-point conversion try, as Sudan took the contest, 27-22.

Wilson was 13-25 passing for 173 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also added 20 carries for 93 yards.

King leg the rushing attack with 11 carries for 34 yards and one touchdown.

Jaibryn Ornelas led the receiving game with four catches for 71 yards, while Flores hauled in three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown and Groetken tallied two catches for 23 yards and one touchdown. Sal Juarez chipped in three catches for 18 yards.

Defensively, King led the Hornets with an interception return for a touchdown, while Andrew Larson picked up two fumbles and tallied eight tackles, including three for loss. Matthew Lopez led the team in tackles with 16, including one for loss, while Juarez chipped in 12 tackles, one for loss, and Joel Williams added, eight tackles, two for loss and a sack.

The Hornets will take on Seagraves at Slaton High School on Thursday in the Class 2A Bidistrict round of the play-offs.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
