The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team clipped the Plains Cowboys on Friday, 47-42, to close out the pre-district schedule.
With the win, the Hornets enter the bye week with a mark of 3-2.
The Hornets totaled 487 yards of offense, including 363 passing yards and 124 rushing yards.
The Cowboys opened the game with a 60-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, followed by the PAT, putting them in front, 7-0. However, the Hornets wasted no time answering, as Sal Juarez caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Trent Wilson, which was followed with the PAT by Wilson to even the score, 7-7.
Plains found the endzone again, this time on a four-yard run, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 13-7. Before the end of the first quarter, Wilson would punch in a one-yard score, but missed the PAT, knotting the score, 1313, as the first quarter came to a close.
Plains found the endzone twice in the second frame, first on a 59yard touchdown pass, which was followed with the PAT to extend the lead to, 20-13, and again to close out the half, on a 22-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good, making the score, 26-13, going into the locker room at halftime.
Sudan would not go away, as Wilson hit Juarez for a 44-yard touchdown pass to open the second half. They missed on the twopoint conversion, and it was returned the other way for twopoints for the Cowboys, making the score, 28-19. Plains would followed it up with a 17-yard touchdown run, and the PAT was good, pushing their lead to, 35-19.
Sudan would close out the third quarter strong, as Juarez caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Wilson, and Wilson followed it up with a 13-yard touchdown run to close out the quarter with the Plains lead cut to, 35-31, going into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Plains threw a 24-yard touchdown pass and made the PAT, to stretch their lead to, 42-31, but Sudan would fire right back, as Jaibryn Ornelas caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Wilson. Wilson followed it up with a run for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to, 4239.
Later in the fourth, Ornelas caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Wilson, which was followed with a two-point conversion run by Wilson, as Sudan completed the comeback, 47-42.
Offensively, Wilson finished the game 13-21 passing for 363 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 14 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Marcello King added nine carries for 67 yards.
Juarez led the receiving game with six catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns, while Ornelas tallied four catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Braxtyn Harrell chipped in one catch for 37 yards and Alan Flores added one catch for 30 yards.
Defensively, Jaden Conley led the Hornets with 17 total tackles, including two for loss, while Kincaid Boehning tallied 15 total tackles, including one for loss. Abel Armendariz chipped in 12 total tackles, including three for loss, and Matthew Lopez finished with 11 tackles, two for loss.
The Hornets are open this week, and will return to the field next Friday when they take on Hale Center to open district play.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
