Hornets sting Ralls, 14-8, for district win

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team took down the Ralls Jackrabbits, 14-8, on Tuesday in district play.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 16-6 overall, 9-2 in district play.

Sudan kept the Jackrabbits scoreless through the first two innings, while pushing four runs across in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second, making the score, 5-0, going into the third inning.

Ralls got on the board in the top of the third, but Sudan answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score, 6-1, going into the fourth inning.

Ralls found some offense in the top of the fourth, as they scratched six runs across to take the lead, 7-6. Sudan, though, would again answer in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, 8-7.

The Hornets would scratch for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to, 13-7, and both teams added a run in the sixth inning to push the lead to, 14-8, before Sudan shut down Ralls in the top of the seventh to take the contest, 14-8.

Caleb Groetken started on the mound for the Hornets, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up seven walks, one hit and six runs, five earned, while earning eight punch outs. Derek Rosa closed out the game, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up four hits, two walks and two runs, while earning four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hornets tallied 10 hits as a team, led by Cal Carter, who finished with three RBI’s, two hits including a double and one walk.

Jaibryn Ornelas tallied one RBI, and two doubles, while Groetken contributed two RBI’s, one hit and one walk, while Marcello King chipped in one RBI and one hit, and Kooper Edwards added one RBI and one hit. Trent Wilson finished with two walks in the contest.

The Hornets were at Ralls on Friday to take on the Jackrabbits to close out the regular season. Results were not available at press time. Post-season information is TBA.
