Wolverines fall to Crosbyton, 14-4, in district play

The Sprignlake- Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team dropped their district game against the Crosbyton Chieftains in Littlefield on Thursday, 14-4, in six innings.

Dylan Doss drew a lead- off walk to begin the top of the first inning for Crosbyton and he took second on a past ball, before Nehemiah Marquez popped up to Slade Beerwinkle behind the plate for out number one. Josiah Vega ripped an RBI-single to right field to put the Chiefs in front, 1- 0, and Nolan Salazar singled on a fielder ’ s choice error by Braden Bradley at second base.

Tyler Tanaro would recover on the mound, as he got Matthew Guerrero to strike out looking for out number two and he got Michael Reyes to strike out swinging to retire the side.

In the home- half of the first, Beerwinkle struck out looking for out number one, but Froylan Agundiz drew a walk and took second on a pitch, before Tanaro reached first safely on a dropped third strike, the throw to first by Nehemiah Marquez was off the mark, as Agundiz took third on the play, putting runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth.

Xavyer Mosqueda hit a sacrifice RBI-chopper to Salazar at shortstop, who got the out at first as Agundiz scored to tie the game, 1- 1, and Tanaro advanced to third with two outs. Bradley would fly out to Aiden Fira in right field to end the inning.

Bam Marquez singled to center field to get the second inning underway for Crosbyton, and Anthony Barela was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on for the Chiefs. Tanaro got Fira to strike out looking for out number one and Doss hit into a fielder ’ s choice to Moses McIver at third, who stepped on his bag for out number two.

Nehemiah Marquez roped an RBI- double to center field to put the Chiefs back in front, 21, as Bradley relieved Tanaro on the mound. Vega blasted a shot to right-center field, driving in two runs, he would end up scoring on a bad throw to third, making the score, 5- 1. Salazar singled to left field, but Guerrero popped up to Mosqueda in foul territory at first base to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the inning, Robert Flores led things off with a single to shortstop on a throwing error by Salazar. He took second on a pitch, before Donovan Stiggers struck out swinging for out number one. Flores took third on a past ball, before Jacob Alvarez singled up the middle to drive in a run, trimming the lead to, 5- 2.

McIver singled on an error by Salazar at shortstop, but Beerwinkle popped up to Vega at second base for out number two. Agundiz singled under the glove of Vega at second base, as Alvarez scored and McIver advanced to third, cutting the lead to, 5-3. Agundiz took second on a pitch, before Tanaro chopped out to Doss on the right side to end the inning.

Reyes drew a lead- off walk to begin the third inning for Crosbyton, but Bam Marquez chopped out to Mosqueda at third base and Bradley got Barela and Fira both to strike out swinging to retire the side.

Mosqueda got the Wolverines off to a quick start in the bottom of the third with a triple to the center- field fence, but Bradley struck out swinging for out number one. Flores lined out to Vega at second base and Stiggers hit a hopper to Barela at first who tagged Stiggers out on the base path to end the inning.

Doss and Nehemiah Marquez opened the fourth inning with back- to- back doubles to make the score, 6- 3, and Vega followed it up with an RBI single to right field, taking second on the throw home, pushing their lead to, 7-3. Salazar was hit by a pitch and Guerrero singled on a fielder’s choice by Bradley to load the bases.

Reyes knocked a two- RBI single up the middle to extend their lead to, 9- 3, but Bradley bounced back and got Bam Marquez to strike out swinging and Barela to strike out looking for two outs. Scott hit into a fielder ’ s choice to McIver at second base, who flipped it to Agundiz at second for the force out to retire the side.

The Wolverine offense strugglded in the bottom of the fourth, as they went three- upand- three- down to take the game into the fifth inning.

Doss led things off in the fifth with an inside of the park homerun over Wyatt Hill in left field, stretching their lead to, 10-3. Nehemiah Marquez was thrown out at first by Tanaro on a dropped third strike for out number one, but Vega singled on a throwing error to first by Mosqueda.

Salazar hit a shot to Mosqueda at third, who made the throw to first, but it was missed by Beerwinkle putting runners on second and third for the Chiefs. Guerrero hit a chopper to Bradley in front of the plate, who tagged Vega running home for out number two. Guerrero took second on a pitch and Salazar scored on a bad pick- off to third by Tanaro, as Guerrero advanced to third with the score, 11- 3.

Reyes drew a walk, putting runners on the corners for Crosbyton, and a few plays later Tanaro fired another shot down to third, but no cover allowed the ball to roll into right field, as two runs scored to make the score, 13- 3. Bradley would get Bam Marquez to strike out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom of the fifth, Agundiz struck out looking for out number one, but Tanaro had a double fall in right field to give the Wolverines a base runner. Tanaro took third on the pitcher and scored on a bad throw down to third by Nehemiah Marquez, trimming the lead to, 13- 4, before Mosqueda struck out swinging for out number two. Bradley would go down looking for out number three, as the game moved into the sixth inning.

Crosbyton would outscore the Wolverines, 1- 0, in the sixth inning to run rule the Wolverines, 14- 4, in district play.

Tanaro pitched 1.2 innings, while giving up three hits, one walk and four runs, three earned, while earning four strikeouts. Bradley tallied 4.1 innings giving up eight hits, two walks and 10 runs, five earned, while earning seven strikeouts.
