Wildcats take care of business against Friona

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team picked up a victory on the road in Friona on Tuesday, as they took down the Chieftains, 75-41.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 19-3 overall, 2-1 in district play.

Friona opened the contest with a bucket, but Jeremiah Trevino quickled tied it up with a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Chip Green. Carson Seaman drove to the basket for a lay-up to regain the lead for Friona, and on the next play, Johnny Gonzalez picked up a steal in the mid-court from MJ Randle and took it to the hoop for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Randle. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 6-2, with 6:03 remaining in the opening quarter.

Green responded with a three from the left wing off of the assist from JeremiahTrevino and on their next possession, Ryan Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and knocked down a three from the right wing to put the Wildcats back in front, 8-6. Randle followed it up with a steal getting the ball ahead to Ryan Williams for a lay-up and two plays later, Ryan Williams drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Trevino for a lay-up, making the score, 12-6, with 4:07 left to play in the first quarter.

Friona took a 30-second time out and out of the break, Omar Martinez drove the lane for a lay-up off of the assist from Jeremiah Trevino. However on the other end, Seaman was fouled on an attempt by Ja’Den Williams, earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws trimming the lead to, 14-7. Ryan Williams answered with a no-look pass to Sir Pratt, who finished the play with a lay-up, but Friona again responded with a lay-up to cut the lead to, 169.

Martinez dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Ryan Williams and on the next play, Ryan Williams hit Martinez with an outlet pass, as he dished it across the lane to Kam McCarty for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 20-9, with under a minute to go in the first quarter. Jose Saucedo dropped in a layup off of an assist from Brice Jeter and with time winding down in the quarter, Seaman was fouled on the floor by Pratt, earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws to make the score, 20-13, as the first quarter came to a close.

Omar Martinez opened the second frame with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Ryan Williams and followed it up with a floater in the lane off of an assist from Jeremiah Trevino, pushing their lead to, 24-13. Saucedo hit Jeter with an outlet pass for a lay-up on the fastbreak, but Littlefield answered with a three to extend the lead to, 27-15, with 5:39 to play in the first half.

On the next play, Justen Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Green and sank both free throws to make it a 10-point Littlefield lead, but Ryan Williams responded quickly with a jumper from the free-throw line to make the score, 29-17. The Chieftains split a pair of free throws, but Ryan Williams again answered for the Wildcats, driving the left baseline for a lay-up, making the score, 31-18, with 4:27 to play in the half.

Omar Martinez drained a three from the right wing off of the assist from Ryan Williams, but on the other end, Saucedo was fouled on an attempt by McCarty, earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 34-20, and on their next possession, Justen Trevino scored off of a long inbound pass to cut the lead to, 3422, as Littlefield took a time out with 2:20 remaining in the half.

Out of the break, Justen Trevino was fouled on the floor by Randle, and split the attempts at the line, but McCarty drove the lane for a floater and followed it up with a layup on the fast-break off of an assist from Ryan Williams, pushing their lead back out to, 38-23. With under a minute to play, Jayden Barrio drove the left baseline for a floater, but in the closing seconds of the half, Justen Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Saucedo to make the score, 40-25, going into the locker room at halftime.

Friona opened the second half with a lay-up, but on the other end, Randle was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Saucedo; he converted both shots at the line and followed it up with a steal, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Saucedo. He missed the free throw, but the ball went out of bounds off of Friona with the score, 44-27.

Jeremiah Trevino banked in a short jumper from the left side off of the inbound pass from Ryan Williams, but on the next play, Seaman was fouled on an attempt by Ryan Williams earning a trip to the line. He missed both free throws, but a lane violation on the second shot against Littlefield, gave him a third attempt, which he converted to trim the lead to, 46-28. Friona followed it up with a lay-up in transition, but Ryan Williams knocked down a three in transition off of an assist from Randle, and Randle followed it up with a three from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 52-30, with three minutes to play in the half.

Green hit Jeremiah Trevino in transition for a lay-up, forcing the Chieftains to take a 30-seconds time out talk things over. Out of the break, Pratt and Ryan Williams dropped in back-to-back lay-ups in transition, pushing the lead to, 5830, with 1:39 to play in the third quarter. Friona split a pair of free throws, but with under a minute to play, Ja’Den Williams sent the outlet pass down court to Ryan Williams, who passed it across the court to Barrio for a lay-up, making the score, 6031.

With time winding down in the quarter, McCarty was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Seaman and split the free throws, making the score, 1-31, going into the final quarter of play.

McCarty drove the lane and dished the ball to Barrio, who was fouled on the attempt by Justen Trevino, earning a trip to the line. He made one-of-two shots from the line to make the score, 62-31, as the fourth quarter got underway. With 6:34 remaining, the Chieftains drew a shooting foul on Ja’Den Williams and split the attempts at the line, making the score, 62-32.

McCarty drew a shooting foul on Seaman, who picked up his fourth foul of the game; he converted both shots at the line, but Justen Trevino responded with a fade-away over Pratt from the right wing to make the score, 64-34. Saucedo followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow, but on the next play, a block by Jeremiah Trevino led to a fastbreak lay-up for Omar Martinez, pushing the score to, 66-36, with 4:22 to play in the game.

Ja’Den Williams dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Ryan Williams, drawing an and-one foul on Jeter. He converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 69-36. With 3:06 left to play, Ja’Den Williams bounced a pass through traffic to Jeremiah Trevino for a lay-up, but Friona responded, as Saucedo knocked down a three from the top of the key and Gonzalez followed it up with a lay-up, cutting the lead to, 71-41.

Barrio drove the lane, dishing the ball to Ja’Den Williams for a lay-up, and Ja’Den Williams followed it up with a lay-up on the right baseline to close out the contest, as Littlefield took down Friona, 75-41. Ryan Williams led the Wildcats posting a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists, to go along with eight rebounds, one steal and one block. Martinez tallied 13 points, two rebounds and one assist, while Trevino contributed 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. McCarty chipped in nine points and two rebounds, while Barrio tallied seven points, one assist and one steal.

Randle contributed seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Green tallied six points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Ja’Den Williams added five points, seven rebounds and one assist, while Pratt finished with two points, one assist and one steal.

The Wildcats hosted Muleshoe on Friday. Results were not available a press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a home game against Denver City.
