Olton takes down Vega, 78-51, for Bi-district trophy

The Olton Mustang’s varsity basketball team got off to a quick start on Tuesday and never looked back, as they cruised past Vega, 7851, to claim the Class 2A Bi-district Championship at Canyon High school.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 20-12 overall on the season.

Olton jumped out to a, 20-10, lead to start the game and they poured in 17 points in the second frame, while holding Vega to just eight points, making the score, 37-18, going into the locker room at halftime.

Both teams netted 21 points in the third quarter to make the score, 58-39, going into the final quarter of play. In the final frame, Olton outscored the Longhorns, 20-12, taking the Bi-district championship, 78-51.

Nate Urbina led the Mustangs with 20 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Alan Vasquez joined him in double-figures scoring with 13 points, to go along with four rebounds and one assist. Johnathan Cooper tallied eight points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Jimmy Munoz contributed eight points, one assist and one steal.

Sebastian Sparkman tallied six points, nine assists and three rebounds, while Brady Azam contributed six points and two rebounds. Zayden Falcon tallied five points, while Wyatt Nelson chipped in five points and one block. Raymond Ramirez tallied four points, three rebounds and one assist, while Zekey Marquez added two points and Matt Flores finsihed with one point.

The Mustangs took on the Gruver Greyhounds on Friday at Caprock High School in Amarillo with the Area Championship on the line. Results were not available at press time.
