Lady Cats finish off Fillies on Wednesday, 26-13

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team began play on Tuesday with the Fillies in Denver City, but the game had to be postponed until Wednesday, due to an injury to the home-plate umpire. The game resumed Wednesday, as the Lady Cats went on to take down the Fillies, 26-13, in their second meeting, sweeping the season-series.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to12-5 overall, 2-3 in district play.

On Tuesday, Denver City jumped in front, 2-0, before play was postponed. When play resumed on Wednesday, Littlefield answered with four runs in the toop of the second and one run in each the third and fourth innings, taking a, 6-2, lead into the bottom of the fourth.

The fillies would respond would four runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 6-6, but Littlefield would explode in the top of the fifth for 13 runs, making the score, 19-6, going into the homehalf of the fifth.

Denver City would scratch for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to, 19-13, but Littlefield would get those seven runs back in the top of the sixth and hold the Fillies scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to claim the run-rule victory, 26-13.

The Lady Cats as a team tallied 19 hits and 20 walks in the victory, led by Lyric Rios, who tallied five RBI’s, three hits including two home runs and one walk.

Alyssa Torres chipped in four RBI’s. One hit for a homerun and four walks, while Taryn Golden tallied thre RBI’s on four hits, including a double and one walk. Brianna Aleman contributed three RBI’s on one hit and two walks, while Natalia Sanchez chipped in two RBI’s on two hits and three walks.

Bryndle Ray had two hits, including a double and two walks, while Cali Saldana contributed two RBI’s on two walks and a double.

Sanchez pitched 4.2 innings for the Lady Cats giving up seven hits, five walks, eight runs, six earned, while earning five strikeouts. Rios pitched 1.1 innings giving up four walks, two hits and five runs, while earning one strike out.

The Lady Cats hosted Lamesa on Saturday for their second meeting with the Lady Tornadoes. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season next Saturday with a road game against Brownfield.

First pitch is scheduled for noon.
