Lady Cats fall to lamesa on the road, 11-8

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softballt team suffered their first district loss of the season on the road on Tuesday, as they fell to the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes, 11-8.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to, 11-2 overall, 1-1 in district play.

In the top of the first inning, sophomore, Bryndle Ray, singled through the left side to lead things off for the Lady Cats and junior, Alyssa Torres, hit a sacrifice grounder to Liliana Contreras in the circle, who got the out at first, as Ray advanced to second with one out. Ray took third on a past ball, before senior, Taryn Golden, hit a short fly ball to Melanie Peretez behind first base for out number two. The lady Cats would strand a runner on third, as junior, Natalia Sanchez hit shot back at Contreras in the circle, who got the out at first to retire the side.

Emiliana Contreras doubled down the first- base line to open the bottom half of the inning for Lamesa and Peretez drew a walk, before Emily Capetillo laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by freshman, Brianna Aleman and thrown to first for the out, as the runners advanced to second and third.

Zoey Sifuentes knocked an RBI-single into left field to put runners on the corners, as Lamesa took a, 1- 0, lead. Sifuentes took second on a pitch and Liliana Contreras followed it up with a two- RBI single into left- center field; she took second on the throw home from Torres, making the score, 3- 0. Sanchez would recover in the circle, as she got Kaylee Hernandez to pop up to Ray behind the circle and she got Lexi hernandez to pop up to Aleman behind the circle to end the inning.

The Lady Cats found some offense to begin the second inning, as Aleman drew a leadoff walk and sophomore, Lyric Rios, singled to center field. Junior, Myli Hernandez, singled to left field to load the bases and junior, Cali Saldana, drew an RBI- walk to trim the lead to, 3- 1. Junior, Brinley Acevedo hit into a fielder’s choice to Sifuentes at shortstop, who got the out at second, leaving runners on the corners with one out and the lead cut to, 3- 2.

Ray hit into a fielder’s choice to Lexi Hernandez at third, who got the out at second, but another run scored to tie the game, 3- 3. Torres, though, would hit into a fielder ’ s choice to Sifuentes at shortstop, who got the out at second to retire the side.

Sanchez got Zariah Contreras to strike out swinging to begin the bottom half of the second inning, but Chrisalynn Uresti drew a walk to give Lamesa a base runner. Uresti took second on a past ball, before Emiliana Contreras hit a grounder to Ray at shortstop, who got the out at first, as Uresti advanced to third with two outs.

Peretez hit an RBI-single up the middle, but Sanchez got Capetillo to strike out swinging to end the inning.

The Lady Cats were able to get a few girls on base in the top of the third, but were unable to scratch any runs across as the game remained, 4- 3, in favor Lamesa.

In the home-half of the third, Sifuentes led off with a solo homerun to left field, stretching their lead to, 5- 3, but Liliana Contreras lined out to Ray at shortstop for out number one. Kaylee Hernandez singled to center field and Lexi Hernandez followed it up with a single to left field as the Lady Tornadoes were threatening again, but Mya Carrejo grounded out to Sanchez in the circle and Uresti grounded out to Rios at first base to end the inning.

The Lady Cats were unable to get anything going in the top of the fourth, as they went three- up- and- three- down.

In the bottom of the fourth, Emiliana Contreras grounded out to Ray at shortstop to begin the inning, but Peretez singled on a hit deep in the hole at shortstop that was kept on the infield with a backhand by Ray, but she was unable to make a play at first. Peretez took second on a past ball, but Capetillo flew out to Torres in left field for out number two.

Sifuentes drove in a run with a single to shallow right field that fell between Saldana and Acevedo to make the score, 63, and Liliana Contreras drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Lamesa. Kaylee Hernandez hit a slow roller down the first- base line that was fielded by Sanchez, who got the out at first to end the inning.

Torres led off the top of the fifth inning with a single up the middle for Littlefield and Golden followed it up with a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Zariah Contreras, putting two runners on for the Lady Cats. Aleman singled up the middle to drive in a run, cutting the lead to, 6- 4, but Rios popped up to Lexi Hernandez behind the circle to retire the side.

Lamesa broke the game open in the bottom half of the fifth scoring five runs to make the score, 11- 4, going into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, junior, Audrey McKinnon, pinch hit for Hernandez, driving a single up the middle to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Saldana hit into a fielder’s choice off of the glove of Liliana Contreras in the circle, but Sifuentes was able to gather the ball and get the force out at second for out number one.

Acevedo hit into a fielder’s choice to Sifuentes at shortstop, who got the out at second for out number two, but Ray followed it up with RBIdouble off of the left- field fence, trimming the lead to, 115. Ray took third on a pitch and scored on a past ball to trim the lead to, 11-6, before Torres drew a walk, and Golden drove her in with an RBI- double to the left-center field fence, cutting the lead to, 11- 7.

Sanchez kept the two- out rally going with an RBI- triple down the right-field line, pushing the score to, 11- 8, as Capetillo relieved Liliana Contreras in the circle for Lamesa. She would get Aleman to ground out to third to retire the side.

The score would stand, 118, as the Lady Cats fell on the road to Lamesa.

Sanchez threw a complete game for the Lady Cats, throwing six innings, giving up 14 hits, three walks and 11 runs, eight earned, while earning three strikeouts.

The Lady Cats wil be back in action on Tuesday, March 26th when they take on the Brownfield Lady Cubs.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
