Jan Smith takes Week Six of Football Contest

With week six of the Lamb County Leader-New’s annual football contest in the books, our contest is just past the halfway point.

This week, Jan Smith and Ronnie Martin tied for the top spot each going 17-3. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the Arizona Cardinals and the San Fransico 49ers, which was 51 points. Jan Smith nailed the tiebreaker, guessing 51 points to take first place, edging out Martin’s guess of 48 points, which was good for second place this week.

For third place, we had five contestants tie with a mark of 164: Martin Duran, Brenda Herrell, Ivan Estrada, Oscar Sanchez and Jonathan Magallanes. This one again came down to the tie-breaker, which went to Duran with a guess of 44 points. He bested Brenda Herrell and Estrada, who each guessed 45 points, Sanchez, who guessed 48 points and Magallanes, who guessed 61 points.

In the high school ranks, Amherst stayed unbeaten with a, 51-6, victory over Claude, while Hart edged out Anton, 27-20, and Olton won their homecoming game over Vega, 52-21. Trinity Christian shutout Denver City, 140, while Muleshoe took care of business against Brownfield, 4821.

McCamey took down Lamesa, 46-25, while Reagan County survived against Kermit, 41-40, and Alpine throttled Tornillo, 74-0. Wink took down Eldorado, 49-14, and Estacado went on the road and took down Sweetwater, 49-14.

In the college ranks, Ole Miss scored a late touchdown to pull out the upset in a shootout over LSU, 55-49, while USC held off the comeback efforts from Colorado, 48- 41. BYU took down the Bearcats, 35-27, while Clemson handed Syracuse their first loss, 31-14, and the Volunteers blasted South Carolina, 41-20.

In the NFL, The Jaguars defeated the Falcons Sunday morning in London, 23-7, while the Titans handled the Bengals, 27-3, and the Chiefs edged out the Jets, 23-20. The Texans blasted the Steelers, 23-20, and the Buccaneers won a division game over the Saints, 26-9.

The rest of the field’s individual scores are as follows: Those who finished 15-5 this week were, Tommy Cloninger, Donna Neinast, Lonnie Neinast, Johnny Rosemond, Dewayne Hayes, Maria Pinon and Charlie Smith, while those who went 14-6 this week were Richard Orozco, JC Orozco, David Neinast, Juan Garza, Larry Ashley, Robin Rlliott, Thomas Blackstone and Sandra Williams.

Terrill Moorhead, Alma Castillo, Stevy Smith, and Sam Castillo each went 13-7 this week, while JR Herrell and Ed Dabrowski each went 12-8, and Jimmy Garcia and James Hood each went 11-9. Teresa Dabrowski finished 10-10 this week.

In the overall standings, Duran holds a three-point lead in first place with 88 points, while Estrada and Richard Orozco are tied for second place with 85 points and Brenda Herrell and Magallanes are tied for third with 84 points.

Cloninger, Donna Neinast and JC Orozco are tied for fourth with 83 points, while Martin, Lonnie Neinast, Rosemond and David Neinast are tied for fifth with 82 points. Sanchez and Hayes are tied for sixth with 80 points, while Moorhead and Alma Castillo are tied for seventh with 79 points.

Pinon and Garza are tied for eighth with 78 points, while Jan Smith, Charlie Smith, Ashley, Stevy Smith and Sam Castillo are tied for ninth with 77 points. Elliott and JR Herrell round out the top 10 tied with 73 points.
