Hornets sting Wolverines on the road, 14-5

The Sudan Hornets’ varstiy baseball team won a road-contest over the Springlake-Earth Wolverines baseball team on Monday, 145.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-3 overall on the year, while the Wolverines fall to 0-3-1 overall on the season.

Sudan’s Jaibryn Ornelas drew a lead-off walk to begin the game and took second on a pitch and third on a wild pitch, before Trent Wilson drove him in with a single up the middle to put the Hornets up, 1-0. Wilson took second on a pitch, before Cal Carter singled on an error by Braden Bradley at third, but Xavyer Mosqueda got Caleb Groetken to strike out swinging for out number one.

Marcello King popped up to Donovan Stiggers in foul territory at first base for out number two, but Julian Salas ripped a two-RBI double to the left-field fence to make the score, 3- 0. Xavyer Mosqueda would get Jesus Salas to strike out looking to retire the side.

The Wolverine offense struggled early-on in the game, as Jesus Salas retired the first three wolverines in order. Slade Beerwinkle, Froylan Agundiz and Bradley all went down swinging to end the first inning.

The Wolverines settled down defensively in the top of the second inning, as Jon Conley struck out looking for out number one and Derek Rosa struck out swinging for out number two. Ornelas singled on an error by Beerwinkle at second base and took second on a past ball, before Wilson popped up to Robert Flores in leftcenter field to retire the side.

In the home-half of the second inning, Xavyer Mosqueda and Flores drew back-to-back walks to get things started for the Wolverines. The courtesy runner Nathan Ramos and Flores advanced to second and third on a pitch before Tyler Tanaro hit a one-hopper to first and was tagged out by Aybran Granados for out number one.

Bryan Longoria reached base on a dropped third strike that got by the catcher, allowing Ramos to score to make the score, 3-1, as Flores was held up at second. Stiggers and Jacob Alvarez both struck out swinging to end the inning, as the Wolverines stranded to runners on base.

In the top of the third inning, Carter singled on an error by Beerwinkle at second base and Groetken followed it up with an RBI-double to the right-field fence, stretching their lead to, 4- 1. Groetken took second on a past ball, before King struck out swinging for out number one.

Julian Salas hit an RBI-single to Bradley at third, who made the throw to first, but it was dropped by Stiggers at first, making the score, 5-1, as Kincaid Boehning came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Jesus Salas followed it up with a double to the center-field fence, but Conley struck out swinging for out number two.

Boehning scored on a past ball, as Jesus advanced to third on the play, making the score 6-1, and Jesus Salas would end up scoring on another past ball, stretching the lead to, 7-1, before Derek Rosa struck out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the third, Beerwinkle struck out swinging for out number one and Agundiz grounded out to King at second base for out number two to lead things off. Bradley singled on a throwing error by Carter from shortstop to first, but Xavyer Mosqueda hit into a fielder’schoice to King at second base who got the out at second base to end the inning.

Ornelas drew a walk to open the fourth inning for Sudan and took second on a pitch, before Wilson struck out looking for out number one. Longoria relieved Xavyer Mosqueda on the mound for Springlake-Earth, as Ornelas took third on a pitch and scored on a bad throw down to third by Tanaro, pushing their lead to, 8-1.

Carter drew a walk for the Hornets, but Groetken popped up to Bradley in foul territory at third for out number two and King flew out to Flores in shallow left-center field to retire the side.

The Wolverines’ offensive struggle continued into the bottom half of the fourth, as Flores flew out to Groetken in center field for out number one. Tanaro hit a shot to Derek Rosa at third, who threw to first for out number two and Israel Martinez struck out swinging to end the inning.

Bradley took the mound in relief of Longoria to begin the fifth inning. Julian Salas was hit by a pitch to lead things off for Sudan, as Boehning came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Jesus Salas struck out looking for out number one, but a few plays later, Boehning took second on a past ball and third on a bad throw down to second by Tanaro, before Conley struck out swinging for out number two.

Boehning would score on a past ball to stretch the lead to, 9-1, before Erica Rosa and Ornelas drew back-to-back walks for the Hornets. Wilson ripped a two-RBI triple to the left-field fence and Carter followed it up with an RBIsingle on a dropped third strike that was dropped at first base, extending the lead to, 12-1.

Groetken singled through the left side and King drew a walk to load the bases, but Julian Salas hit a chopper up the middle that as fielded by Agundiz and thrown to first for the out to retire the side.

In the home-half of the fifth, Ethan Mosqueda struck out swinging and Moses McIver struck out looking for two quick outs, but Beerwinkle was hit by a pitch to give the Wolverines a base runner. Beerwinkle stole second on a pitch and a balk by Jesus Salas put Beerwinkle on third, before Agundiz drew a walk to put runners on the corners.

Agundiz stole second on the pitcher, before Bradley ripped an RBI double past Eric Rosa at third to trim the lead to, 12-2. Xavyer Mosqueda knocked an RBI-single into right field to trim the lead to, 12-3, but Flores struck out looking to end the inning.

Jesus Salas drew a lead-off walk to begin the sixth inning for Sudan, but he was picked off at first by Tanaro for out number one. Conley struck out looking for out number two and Eric Rosa struck out looking to reitre the side.

King releived Eric Rosa on the mound to begin the bottom of the sixth inning for Sudan, as Tanaro singled over second base to get things started for the Wolverines. Tanaro took second on a pitch and third on another pitch, before Longoria hit into a fielder’s choice to King who went home with the ball, but the ball was dropped by Julian Salas as Tanaro scored to make the score, 12-4.

Longoria stole second on the pitcher and third on a pitch, before Ramos struck out swinging for out number one. McIver struck out swinging for out number two. Beerwinkle drew a walk, as Longoria scored on a past ball, cutting the lead to, 12-5.

Cartr relieved King on the mound for Sudan, as he got Agundiz to strike out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Bradley got Ornelas to strike out looking for out number one, but Wilson drilled a double to left-center field to give the Hornets a base runner. Carter singled past Agundiz at shortstop to bring in a run and advanced to second on the throw home from Flores, as Sudan pushe the lead back out to, 13-5.

Carter took third on a past ball, before Groetken had an RBIdouble fall in center field on a dropped ball by Flores, making the score, 14-5. King popped up to Beerwinkle in shallow right field for out number two and Julian Salas struck out swinging to retire the side.

The Wolverines were unable to scratch any runs across in the bottom of the seventh as they fell at home to the Hornets, 14-5.

Jesus Salas started on the mound for the Hornets pitching four innings, while giving up one hit, two walks and one run, while earning eight strikeouts. Eric Rosa pitched one inning of work giving up one hit, one walk and two runs, while earning three strikeouts, and King pitched 0.2 innings giving up two hits, one walk and two runs, while earning two strikeouts. Carter closed the game pitching the final inning, giving up just two hits, while earning two strikeouts.

For the Wolverines, Xavyer Mosqueda started on the mound pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three hits, four walks and eight runs, two earned, while earning eighth strikeouts. Longoria pitched 0.2 innings giving up just one walk, while Bradley closed ou the game, pitching three innings giving up four walks, three hits and six runs, four earned, while earning seven strikeouts.
