Hornets, mustnags split double-header

The Sudan Hornets and Olton Mustang’s varsity baseball team split a double-header on Wednesday in Olton. Olton took game one, 8- 6, while Sudan won game two, 22-3.

In game one, both teams scratched three runs across in the first inning, before going scoreless through the second inning. Sudan added two runs in the bottom half of the third inning, taking a, 5- 3, lead into the fifth inning.

Olton would add a run in the top of the fifth and another run in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 5-5, forcing extra innings. Olton would outscore Sudan, 3-1, in the ninth inning to take game one of the double-header, 8-6.

For Olton, Alan Vasquez pitched 3.1 innings giving up four walks, three hits and two runs, while earning four strikeouts. Paytn Jimenez pitched 0.2 innings for the Mustangs giving up four hits, one walk and three runs, two earned. Cole Montgomery tallied five innings, giving up two hits, three walks and one run, while earning seven punch outs.

For Sudan, Cal Carter tossed six innings for the Hornets giving up three walks, three hits and four runs, while earning seven strikeouts. Jesus Salas threw three innings for the Hornets, giving up two walks, two hits and four runs, while earning three strikeouts. At the plate for Olton, they tallied five hits as a team, led by Fabian Gutierrez, who had two RBI’s and one hit for a triple. Jaxon Tomsu and Adolfo Garcia each tallied one hit for a double, while Eddie Ramirez and Jett Tomsu each added an RBI.

For Sudan at the plate, they tallied nine hits as a team, led by Marcello King, who finished with two RBI’s and two hits including a homerun and a double. Caleb Groetken chipped in one RBI and two hits including a double, while Jesus Salas finished with one RBI, one hit and one walk.

In game two, Sudan jumped out in front early and never looked back. The Hornets stung the Mustangs for seven runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the top of the second to take an, 8- 0, lead into the third inning.

The Hornets pushed another seven runs across in the top of the third inning, but Olton would answer back with two runs in the home- half of the inning, trimming the lead to, 15- 2. Sudan would outscore Olton, 7-1, in the fourth inning, before both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning, as Sudan went on to take game two, 22-3.

For Olton, Victor Reyes pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two hits, two walks and two runs, while earning one strikeout. Montgomery pitched 0.1 innings, giving up one hit, two walks and two runs; earning one strikeout, while Jacob Marquez chipped in 0.1 innings, giving up two hits, two walks and six runs. Gutierrez added 0.1 innings giving up two hits, two walks and five runs, four earned, while Vasquez contributed 0.2 innings earning one strikeout, while giving up three hits, four walks and seven runs, six earned. Raymond Ramirez pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and one walk, while earning one strike out.

For Sudan, Groetken threw a complete game, pitching five innings, giving up two walks, two hits and three runs, while earning nine punchouts.

At the plate for Olton, they tallied two hits, led by Marquez who finished with two RBI’s and one hit for a double. Eddie Ramirez also had an RBI for the Mustangs.

For the Hornets at the plate, they tallied 11 hits as a team, led by Jesus Salas, who finished with six RBI’s, three hits including a double and a triple and two walks. Carter recorded three RBI’s and a hit, while Derek Rosa contributed five RBI’s and three hits including a double.

Groetken added two RBI’s, two hits and two walks, while King finished with two RBI’s, a hit and a walk.
