Hornets Drop Heart-Breaker on Homecoming to Seagraves, 21-20

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team dropped a heartbreaker on Homecoming to the Seagraves Eagles on Friday, 2120.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-2 overall on the season.

The Hornets totaled 285 yards of offense, including 158 passing yards and 127 rushing yards.

Carlos Espinoza opened the scoring for Seagraves in the first quarter with a 53-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 6- 0. Seagraves’ Juan Rivera would follow it up with a 26-yard passing touchdown to Cade Humphries. Raymond Rodriguez would rush for the two-point conversion to make the score, 14-0.

Sudan would respond, as Wilson rushed for a one-yard touchdown, followed with the PAT from Caleb Groetken, trimming the lead to, 14-7. However, the Eagles would fire back, as Rodriguez rushed for a one-yard touchdown to close out the first quarter, making the score, 21-7, after the PAT.

Neither team would score in the second frame, as the score stood going into the locker room at halftime.

Marcello King would break free for a 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, making the score, 2114, after the PAT. In the fourth quarter, Wilson would score on a four-yard touchdown run to make it a one-point game, 21-20. The PAT was no good to tie the game, as Sudan went on to drop the contest, 21-20.

Offensively, Wilson finished the game 10-31 passing for 158 yards and three interceptions, while also adding 11 carries for 16 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

King led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 111 yards and one touchdown.

In the receiving game, Alan Flores caught three passes for 91 yards, while Jaibryn Ornelas finished with four catches for 51 yards and Sal Juarez caught one pass for 11 yards.

Defensively, Juarez and Lopez each tallied 11 total tackles, while Flores chipped in nine total tackles and Jaden Conley contributed seven tackles. Jon Conley finished with six tackles, while Kincaid Boehning and Andrew Larson each finished with five tackles. Boehning also hauled in an interception and Juarez recovered a fumble.

The Hornets will be at at Plains on Friday to take on the Cowboys to close out the pre-district schedule.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
