LHS Seniors receive Rotary scholarships

Thursday night, May 12, 2022, the Rotary Club of Littlefield, hosted a Scholarship Award Banquet for the 13 Littlefield High School students who were to receive their Rotary scholarships.

Only eight of those 13 students attended the banquet and received certificates and information about their Rotary Scholarships, while the other five were out of town participating in sports events.

The program began with a Wel come from Rotary President Jason Hunter, who used the gavel on the Rotary Bell to signal it was time to begin.

Dave Gruver led the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag, which was followed by Mike DeLoach’s invocation.

Rotary Secretary Dezi Vargas led the congregation in repeating “The 4-Way Test - of the things we think, say, or do;”

Everyone was invited to get their favorite food from Loco’s Mexican Food Restaurant’s catering line, for the meal.

Following the meal, Davis Gruver gave information about how Rotary began in 1905 in Chicago, when Rotarians met at different places to fellowship, and learn about their fellow Rotarian.

Gruver mentioned that there are now 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the world, which is involving 1.4 million people “serving others above themselves”.

Rotary Secretary Dezi Vargas gave some history of Littlefield’s Rotary Club, which was sponsored by the Lubbock Rotary in a special ceremony in Littlefield, on Nov. 26, 1926.

He reported that on Thursday night, the Littlefield Rotary Club was giving away $104,000 in the 13 scholarships ($1,000 for each of the eight semesters of college study.)

John Roley gave history of the Rotrians who established the scholarships, and the way they wanted them to be presented for scholarships with the interest of their money.

John Roley gave a lot of sensible advice to the seniors, on receiving the scholarships as A “Hand-Up” (not a Hand-Down”) as they enter college studies.

Kay Franklin-Powell explained to the scholars, about the signing of a Scholarship Pledge, and keeping the promises made in those pledges.

Mike DeLoach and Kay King presented the scholarships to the eight scholars, and introduced their Rotary mentors.

Dezi Vargas then adjourned the banquet.
