Texas District 88 State House Representative Ken King held an hour long townhall meeting in the Lamb County Court Room, Monday, Dec. 6, at 4 pm.

King addressed recent legislation as well as fielding constituents’ legislative concerns that may be arising in the near future.

King began by describing changes resulting from redistricting. He commented that he lost three counties that were closest to his home in Canadian, Texas. District 88 had 19 counties and now encompasses 17 counties, including Andrews County, the location of Waste Control Specialists which has been disposing of the nation’s low-level nuclear waste for a decade at a hazardous waste facility on the New Mexico border. He stated that population largely determines the ex-panse of District 88 and there just aren’t many people north of Amarillo.”

He briefly discussed the new Voting Integrity Bill stating that the bill changes were not about suppressing voters or for that matter about voter fraud, but rather about counties “creating their voting laws” as Harris County did to facilitate voting in the largest urban county in the state during the pandemic. He stated that there were very few prosecutions for voting fraud and mistakes in relation to the around 2 million votes cast. He stated that “voting laws are established by the state and followed as written by all counties without exception.” He briefly addressed the question of transgender students in sports and is working with UIL and in committee to assess the issue more thoroughly. He mentioned that UIL is not sure exactly how many transgender cases are being dealt with.

When questioned about vaccine mandates, Representative King stated that he was not supportive of any party imposing mandates on private businesses due to consideration of liability issues.”
